MANILA – The newly-acquired fast-attack interdiction craft-missiles (FAIC-Ms) will boost the Philippine Navy's (PN) capability to protect the country's littoral zones.

The littoral or nearshore is the part of a sea, lake, or river that is close to the shore.

"These ships could be deployed to patrol and protect our littorals from any possible threats," PN spokesperson Commander Benjo Negranza said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency Tuesday.

Other possible missions of these ships will be determined by the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), he added.

The BRP Nestor Acero (PG-901) and BRP Lolinato To-Ong (PG-902), which were formally christened in rites at the PN headquarters in Manila on Tuesday, are the first two out of the nine FAICS-Ms acquired by the Philippines from Israel Shipyards Limited for PHP10 billion.

These vessels are named after two Philippine Marine Corps heroes and Medal of Valor recipients -- the late Private First Class Nestor Acero and the late 1st Lt. Lolinato To-Ong.

"This acquisition aims to strengthen the country's naval capability in terms of enhancing littoral defense and maritime interdiction operations as it will complement the previously acquired 12 MPAC (multi-purpose attack craft) of the PN," Negranza said.

These two FAIC-Ms were sponsored by Soledad B. Bacarro, the wife of AFP chief-of-staff Lt.Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro.

The two vessels were loaded aboard a cargo ship and departed Haifa, Israel in late August. These vessels were formally launched last June 26.

Three more vessels are scheduled to be delivered starting this year while the remaining four units will be constructed at the PN shipyard in Naval Station Pascual Ledesma in Cavite City.

MANILA – The Philippine Navy (PN) is planning to acquire at least 15 more Israel-made Shaldag Mark V missile boats, which are the basis of its Acero-class patrol gunboats.

"We are planning to get 15 additional 'Acero'-class gunboats (to augment the) nine (now on the pipeline)," Navy chief Rear Adm. Toribio Adaci Jr. told reporters on the sidelines of the commissioning and send-off ceremony for the fast attack interdiction craft missiles (FAIC-Ms) BRP Nestor Acero (PG-901) and BRP Lolinato To-Ong (PG-902) Monday.

Adaci said the additional "Acero"-class gunboats would help them to meet their requirements in "patrolling the seas of the country".

He also said the FAIC-Ms will be assigned to the Littoral Combat Force.

He said four more FAIC-Ms, the other name of the "Acero" class in the PN service, will be delivered sometime in 2023.

"I don't know the exact delivery dates next year but this shall be throughout (next year)," the PN chief added.

The last batch of three, which will be built at the PN shipyard in the Naval Station Pascual Ledesma in Cavite, is scheduled for 2024.

Adaci said Israel Shipyard Limited will help the PN rehabilitate the old shipyard and make it more modern and allow it to build these types of ships.

"In that way, our people can learn how to do it, maintain these ‘Acero’ class boats and that will be the start of the transfer of technology," he said.

The Philippine Navy has commissioned two new fast attack interdiction craft during a ceremony at Naval Station Jose Andrada in Manila on Monday.

According to Adaci, BRP Nestor Acero and PG902 are only two of the nine fast attack interdiction craft missile vessels acquired from Israel Shipyards Limited for the price of P10 billion under the Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program.

Adaci said four other vessels will be delivered in 2023 and the remaining three will be constructed at the naval shipyard in the country in 2024.

Aside from these nine vessels, Adaci said the Navy is planning to have 15 additional Acero class boats. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
