CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Philippines — A Bell utility helicopter of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) crashed on a rice field in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon province, around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, killing all seven people aboard.

Maj. Gen. Andres Centino, commander of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, said the ill-fated Bell UH-1H “Huey,” with tail number 517, was one of two choppers on a mission to resupply a unit of the 403rd Infantry Brigade stationed in a mountain forward base in Impasugong town, 64 kilometers from Malaybalay.

The two choppers had already completed two runs to Impasugong and took off from their Malaybalay base around 1:50 p.m. for their third run when the pilot of the helicopter in the rear saw smoke coming from the forward chopper as they were passing over Barangay Busdi.

The pilot of the forward chopper, identified by an Inquirer source as Lt. Col. Arnie Arroyo, with a certain 2nd Lt. Caabay as copilot, informed the other aircraft that they would be turning back. But “the chopper nosedived” as it turned, Centino said.

“The pilot made sure they would not crash-land on a group of houses, hence they ended up in the ricefield,” he added.

Christina Mendez, Edith Regalado (The Philippine Star ) - January 24, 2021 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte wants all Huey helicopters in the Philippine Air Force’s inventory to be decommissioned due to their frequent involvement in fatal crashes.

During a camp visit at Camp Teodulfo Bautista in Jolo, Sulu on Friday, the President wanted to know how many Hueys were left and said that these were old, and there’s nothing more that can be done about them even if given good maintenance.

The Department of National Defense expresses its sincerest appreciation for President Duterte’s intention to purchase more helicopters for the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

The ultimate aim of the ongoing PAF CUH Acquistion Program is to procure assets that will replace the current fleet of UH-1s of our Air Force. This program has enabled us to recently add the Sikorsky S70i Blackhawk to the PAF’s inventory.

Any program involving the acquisition of brand new hardware takes time as the new units come fresh out of the manufacturing plants, are assembled, inspected and delivered in a process that takes several months to complete.

Following the crash in Bukidnon, the entire UH-1 fleet has been grounded. In the interim, we have rotary aircraft such as the Bell 412s and Blackhawks that will take up some of the slack left by the withdrawal of the UH-1s from the field.

We are expecting the delivery of 10 more Blackhawks early this year, and these units will be deployed as soon as they pass mandatory technical inspection and acceptance procedures.

Arsenio R. Andolong – Spokesperson, Department of National Defense
