Pence Welcomes Futile Bid by G.O.P. Lawmakers to Overturn Election

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/02/us/politics/gop-senators-josh-hawley-election.html

WASHINGTON ó Vice President Mike Pence signaled support on Saturday for a futile Republican bid to overturn the election in Congress next week, after 11 Republican senators and senators-elect said that they would vote to reject President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.ís victory when the House and Senate meet to formally certify it.

The announcement by the senators ó and Mr. Penceís move to endorse it ó reflected a groundswell among Republicans to defy the unambiguous results of the election and indulge President Trumpís attempts to remain in power with false claims of voting fraud.

WASHINGTON (AP) ó A coalition of 11 Republican senators announced Saturday it will challenge the outcome of the presidential election by voting to reject electors from some states when Congress meets next week to certify the Electoral College results that confirmed President-elect Joe Biden won.

President Donald Trumpís extraordinary refusal to accept his election defeat and the effort to subvert the will of the voters has become a defining moment for Republicans and is tearing the party apart. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has urged Republican not to try to overturn the election.
