Mindanao Railway starts construction in Q1 2020

MANILA, Philippines — Construction of the first segment of the country’s first train system outside Luzon, which will be financed through an official development assistance from China, is poised to commence by the first quarter of next year, with its contractor to be known before the year ends, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

DOTr Assistant Secretary for railways and Mindanao projects Eymard Eje said bidding for the construction of the first phase of the Mindanao Railway Project is scheduled on November, with the project’s groundbreaking set by early next year.

China will provide a shortlist of three contractors for the project. The DOTr will then select which contractor will undertake the project through a limited competitive bidding.

Phase 1 of the Mindanao Railway Project is a 102-kilometer rail line that will link the Davao Region through Tagum, Davao City, and Digos.

DAVAO CITY—At least four Chinese companies have already expressed interest to build an P82.9-billion segment of the Mindanao railway project (MRP), government officials said.

Eymard Eje, Department of Transportation (DoTr) assistant secretary for project implementation-Mindanao cluster, named state-owned Chinese firms China Railway International Group (CRIG) and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) among those interested in the project.

Li Lin, the Chinese consul general in Davao City, earlier identified China State Construction Engineering Corp (CSCEC) and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) as the two firms interested to undertake the railway project.

Bidding for Mindanao railway opens in November

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/13 September) – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will open for bidding phase 1 of the 1,550-kilometer Mindanao Railway Project in November 2019, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol announced early Friday.

Piñol made the announcement after his meeting with Transportation Assistant Secretary Eymard Eje on Thursday to discuss the progress of the delayed railway project.

Phase 1 will cover 102 kilometers connecting Tagum City, Davao City, and Digos City, and would have eight stations, namely: Tagum; Carmen; Panabo; Mudiang in Bunawan, Davao City; Davao Terminal; Toril; Sta. Cruz; and Digos.

The government had set aside P6 billion from the 2018 General Appropriations Act for the road right of way acquisition for properties along the railway path.

Piñol said the groundbreaking is expected to take place early next year.
