Philippines reveal multirole fighter options

The Philippines is looking to acquire one of four multirole fighter types to enhance the air defence and border protection capabilities of the country's air force.

Speaking on 14 November, a senior Philippine Air Force (PAF) official presented a briefing slide showing the Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon, Sukhoi Su-30 'Flanker, and Saab Gripen as the options being considered to augment the service's current fleet of Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50PH Fighting Eagle light-strike fighters.

Hm, second-hand it doesn't really tell us much about how seriously the listed aircraft are being considered.

Could have just been a slide featuring various aircraft on the market, not necessarily of the ones being seriously considered.

First time I've heard Typhoon mentioned as an option, was also under the impression the F-16s pretty much already had this in the bag.

If there's anything that even old timawans always expect is that nothing is final until that thing is accepted and delivered.

Even deals that have been signed and were in the progress of being delivered had been cancelled mid-way (re: refurbed 21 UH-1H/D).

Well, here's hoping we don't see a surprise MRF contract with China or Russia.

I may be reading too much between the lines but:

augment - transitive verb: to make greater, more numerous, larger, or more intense.

semantics or are the -50s to remain the prime weapon system for the air force?

The MRF project will be moving ahead, but the selection is not as final as people have been led to believe.

Different schools of thought are at work . . . and the marketing engine for competing products have different cycles. The Gripen sales force was working hard for a number of years. Now it's the Falcon's turn.

The FA-50s won't be alone for long.
