Daraga, Albay—The Bicol International Airport being built here, targeted for completion next year, is seen to unlock the tourism potential of Southern Luzon, according to Albay Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda.

The Albay lawmaker noted that with the country’s encouraging trend on tourism, the BIA is expected to play a major role in achieving a target potential of 20 million tourist arrivals annually.

The solon said Bicol would be hailed as the “Most Scenic Gateway” the country would ever have, and that the role of the BIA “will be huge since the Department of Tourism has upped its campaign in bringing foreign ambassadors to the country’s globally known, yet less-visited destinations.”

Tourists flying in via the BIA will land right in the heart of the Bicol region’s tourism hub, Albay province, home to the iconic Mayon Volcano and the Cagsawa Ruins without travelling far from the airport to visit them, the lawmaker pointed out.
Salceda expressed optimism that with its P4.798-billion budget, the project will be completed before the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term.

Pushed by Salceda during his earlier stint in Congress and later as Albay governor and Bicol Regional Development Council chairman for nine years, the BIA project started in 2005 but construction began only in earnest in 2009.

Despite being hampered by several hitches and delays, Salceda, said the project now has “reasonable optimism that the executive decisiveness of the Duterte administration could deliver the BIA, a vital infrastructure to the main potential of Bicol and Southern Luzon, and which is also crucial  to country’s development program.”

Last month the Department of Transportation reported that BIA’s construction was 57.44 percent complete.

On the suspected arson incident at the ongoing construction site of the new Bicol International Airport

https://www.facebook.com/DOTrPH/posts/1420065428132589

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) received information that a suspected arson incident took place in the vicinity of the ongoing construction site of the Bicol International Airport (BIA) at about 9:30AM today, 26 July 2019.

Five (5) suspects armed with high powered firearms were confirmed members of the New People’s Army (NPA). They were sighted in Brgy. Gapo, Daraga, Albay.

According to reliable sources, said NPAs conducted a checkpoint and waylaid a dump truck of Cuerpo Construction and burned it, forcing its driver to abandon the said vehicle. The military in pursuit was reported to have engaged in a firefight with the involved armed NPA elements.

Cuerpo Construction Company is one of the contractors for the ongoing construction of the New Bicol International Airport Complex, one of the gateways that the DOTr is building to boost air connectivity in the country.

Operatives from the Philippine Army were directed to proceed to the area for further investigation and possible identification of perpertrators.

The DOTr views this incident with deep regret, as this is not the first suspected arson incident in the area. Such attacks bring unnecessary delay to the fruition of the President’s transportation goals, most especially as DOTr has been working triple time to deliver infrastructure development in the hope of spurring regional growth and development.

The Bicol International Airport (BIA), one of the flagship infrastructure projects under the “BUILD, BUILD, BUILD” Program of the Duterte Administration, is indeed making GREAT HEADWAY, after its almost 13 YEARS OF DELAY!

The original pre-feasibility study of the Bicol International Airport (BIA) predates back in 1996, and the Notice to Proceed for the construction of said project was given in 2003.

However, actual construction only commenced in 2016.

Under the current administration of our strong-willed President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, and with the visionary leadership of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugadethe BIA project is finally moving at an accelerated pace.

As of 19 April 2021, Package 2A of the airport development project, which covers the construction of landside facilities and other buildings, is 93.71% complete.

Meanwhile, Package 2B, covering the construction of the PTB and runway extension, as well as the construction of the taxiway, drainage, and other site development works, is 64.61% complete.

Once completed, the airport is set to serve a total of two (2) million passengers every year, which will surely boost air traffic and tourist arrivals in the region.

For Secretary Tugade, the fulfillment of this long-awaited major transport project for the Bicolanos, is a powerful statement of President Duterte's desire to see significant improvement across regions, which he recognized and pushed for its realization, with the help and full support of the DOTr Aviation Sector, along with other government agencies and the LGUs.

Envisioned to be a key infrastructure projects under the "BUILD, BUIILD, BUILD" program, the airport will pave the way for the Albay province and the Bicol Region to be transformed into an economic powerhouse, which will greatly benefit the Bicolanos for years ahead, with vast opportunities for more jobs, entrepreneurial opportunities, and the potential boom in tourism.
