One of China’s first-generation fleet replenishment ships, Hongze Hu , was decommissioned in a ceremony held on 6 September at a naval base near Qingdao. Originally named Taicang , the 22,000-tonne vessel carried pennant numbers X575, Beiyun 575, and 575 before being renamed in 2002 and given pennant number 881.

It is one of four Type 905 Fuqing-class auxiliary ships built in Dalian and was in service for 38 years. Of the other ships in the class, one was transferred for commercial use, one is in service with the Pakistan Navy as PNS Nasr , and the third ( Poyang Hu 882) remains in service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN’s) East Sea Fleet.

Poyang Hu was launched two years after Hongze Hu and was commissioned in 1982.
