China has awarded its highest accolade for science and technology, the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, to 82-year-old engineer Qian Qihu for his work in guaranteeing "the security of the country's strategic arsenal against potential attacks, including those from future hypersonic weapons", the state-owned Global Times newspaper reported on 13 January.

The report highlights that although the depth at which these UGFs are located provides sufficient protection from attack, access and exit points may be vulnerable, and developments instigated by Qian have provided extra protection for these areas.
