Korea Aerospace Industries Co. (KAI), South Korea's sole aircraft manufacturer, on Monday, January 8, began delivery of its advanced T-50 trainer jet to Thailand's air force. KAI received two separate orders to build four T-50TH trainer jets worth US$110 million in 2015 and eight T-50TH jets valued at $260 million last year.

Two of the first four trainer jets will be delivered to the Southeast Asian country via a 12-hour ferry flight, the company said in a statement.

Thailand to receive first T-50 jet trainers
Gareth Jennings - Jane's Defence Weekly
08 January 2018

Deliveries of the first Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50 Golden Eagle lead-in fighter trainers to Thailand began on 8 January, South Korean media reported.

Two of the first batch of four T-50TH (Thailand) aircraft have left Seoul for Bangkok as the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) begins the process of replacing its current fleet of Aero L-39 Albatros jet trainers.

Thailand is currently signed up for 12 T-50TH aircraft across two batches of four and eight respectively. Janeís was told on 17 October 2017 that KAI hoped to begin talks shortly for the four fighters that are outstanding from Thailandís original requirement of 16, though no word has yet been given as to whether this has yet happened and KAI had not responded to a request for information by the time of publication. It is possible that as many as 18 T-50THs could eventually be procured.

The commencement of deliveries to Thailand comes some months after it was announced in late September 2017 that the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) is to receive an undisclosed additional number of TA-50-variant aircraft from 2019 to add to the more than 70 it already fields.

Further to Thailand and South Korea, all of the Philippines 12 FA-50-variant aircraft have been delivered, and that six of the 24 FA-50s ordered by Iraq have now been handed over to that country. Indonesia has received all of its 16 T-50 aircraft.

RTAF commissions first four T-50TH LIFT aircraft

Gabriel Dominguez, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
05 April 2018

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) commissioned four Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50TH Golden Eagle lead-in fighter trainers (LIFT) in a ceremony held on 4 April at Tarkly Air Base, according to a statement by KAI.

The aircraft are the first four of 12 armed T-50THs ordered by the service from 2015 in two batches of four and eight, with delivery of the second batch expected to begin in late 2019. The platforms are set to replace the RTAFís ageing Aero L-39ZA Albatros jet trainers in roles including lead-in fighter training, combat search and rescue, escort, and light attack. The RTAF has plans to acquire an additional four T-50TH aircraft.

The T-50THs are fitted with elements of armed capability found on the FA-50 combat aircraft version, according to Jane's World Air Forces. KAI officials have told Jane's that the aircraft will be "close to the specifications of the FA-50 but missing some capability elements", such as Link 16 tactical datalinks.

SEOUL -- South Korea's sole aircraft maker has secured a new deal worth $78 million to deliver two more T-50 military trainers by the end of November 2023 to Thailand.
