ANOTHER international direct route opened Tuesday, June 18, as Qatar Airways launched its newest route -- Doha-Davao, the first long-haul flight in Mindanao.

The inaugural flight -- Qatar Airways flight QR936 -- carried 133 passengers and departed Hamad International Airport (HIA) at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, and landed at the Davao airport around 6 p.m. Tuesday, a short delay of some 40 minutes.

The multi-awarded airline will service the route once a week, every Friday using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 22 seats in Business Class and 232 seats in Economy Class.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said the airline is proud to extend its reach into the Philippines and the inclusion of Davao into their global network.

Koleilat, for his part, said the flight to Davao City will have a stopover at the Clark International Airport in Clark, Pampanga, while the flight from Davao City to Doha will be a nine hours and 55 minutes direct flight.

Mindanao Development Authority Deputy Executive Director Romeo Montenegro said the launch of Doha-Davao air route ushers in enhanced Mindanao connectivity to major global destinations in the Middle East as well as links to Europe.

However, to maintain the route, Montenegro emphasized that efforts need to be exerted both by the government and private sector

"This is to ensure that this flight cruises through levels of sustainability," he said.

Qatar Airways is the fourth international carrier to serve Davao City after XiamenAir, Cathay Dragon, and SilkAir.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines in Davao Region in Davao Region (Caap-Davao) has not yet identified an engineering firm that will design the P700-million expansion project of the Francisco Bangoy International Airport or the Davao International Airport.

Caap-Davao airport manager Rex Obcena said the agency is still in the process of looking for the engineering consultancy firm who will design the project which they target to be available by the end of the year or early next year.

“If I am not mistaken, in the middle of this year, funds were downloaded to us (Caap) from DOTR (Department of Transportation) then nag process dayon for the procurement of services of katong maghimo og design (then we started looking for the services of the consultancy firm who will do the design),” he said.
