STORY OF A PAF VETERAN: AN AC-47 CREW'S GALLANT ACTION OVER JOLO... During the fierce engagements with the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in the early 1970s in the Mindanao-Sulu area, PAF air units provided much needed air support for ground and naval forces of the AFP... Under the command of the Commanding General then GENERAL RANCUDO current platforms were tested and converted to provide additional firepower in support of operations against the insurgents...

Among these platforms was the AC-47 "Attack" Gooney Bird equipped with numerous 50 caliber machineguns said to have been taken from retired World War 2 era F-51 Mustangs... One was used on 13 January 1974, strafing and said to perform "bombing runs" against rebel concentrations and fortification on the rolling plains of the island of Jolo... Despite hits from intense enemy ground fire (numbers of F-86F Sabrejets were damaged and shot down during the same campaign at the same areas) on their lumbering aircraft it continued to perform low-level runs against rebel targets at Parang, Bilaan and Maimbung... After an estimated 18 hits on their AC-47s wings and fuselage, the crew decided to land at Jolo airport, changed aircraft, take-off and resume close-air support operations... Their operation affected the MNLF's ability to sustain operations against government forces in the town of Jolo...

To make the story more remarkable the PAF personnel involved in the operation were all senior officers and enlisted personnel: COLONEL AVELINO E AMERICA, COLONEL ISMAEL A SABARRE, COLONEL TELESFORO TAYKO JR, COLONEL NERESITO P CREUS, COLONEL LUIS J DIANO, COLONEL VICENTE M PICCIO JR, COLONEL FELICIANO B MAGSAKAY JR, COLONEL DOMINADOR M AQUINO JR, MAJOR BENJAMIN S ESCOBAR, TSg Inocentes A Huera, TSg Salavador G Manojo and SSg Faustino R Cadavona...

While the officers deserve to be commended for not letting their ranks get in the way of dangerous duty . . .

. . . was this line up because of the experimental nature of the mission?

The AC-47 at the time was not experimental.  There was more than one AC-47 and missions were common.
Senior officers could and did go up often.

Safe to say it was a chance to get some action, and not because there was anything wrong with the default crew?

Nothing wrong with it at all.  Also, that would qualify as flight time and you get flight pay.
