Russian Amphibious Vehicles
« on: September 11, 2017, 06:58:02 PM »
So, a couple months back when the relations with Russia were just starting to warm up, I read a couple articles about Russian heavy equipment manufacturers looking to export construction and agricultural equipment in anticipation of planned infrastructure development and agricultural mechanization. Once such company was RM Terex, which partnered up with local company ConEquip to distribute their products in the Philippine market.

Out of curiosity, I decided to look up their product catalog and discovered that they made several tracked amphibious vehicles. I was reminded of the failed Small Amphibian Vehicle (SAV) acquisition project of the PN/PMC. which had been awarded to Hydatrek, Inc. but ended up not going anywhere after the company failed to deliver any units during the specified delivery period. Which got me to thinking of the possibility of sourcing Russian equipment should the PMC or the DND ever decide to revive the idea as part of upgrading the AFP's HADR capabilities. After all, the Russians are no strangers to rough, off-road terrain and the need for rugged vehicles needing amphibious capabilities.

Looking through RM Terex's catalog, their product line compares rather favorably when compared to the previous prospect: the Hydratrek D2488B.

*Note: This particular model appears to be either a refurbished or copied from the Swedish Bandvagn 206.

In my opinion the utilitarian GAZ-34039 model would fit the bill quite well with it's roughly similar size and carry capacity but better performance on land and water, albeit with greater curb weight. There's also the different trims and configurations available  with option for an open back with canvas cover or hard cover.

Note that I included a couple not so small amphibious vehicles in the articulated tracked wagons. Those are much larger (and more capable) than the original requirement, but are far from the largest amphibious all-terrain vehicles made by the Russians.

On the larger end of the spectrum is Vityaz's series of all-terrain vehicles: DT-10, -20 & -30. An articulated tracked design like the GAZ-3344, Bandvagn 206 and Bronco ATTC, the amphibious models are donated by a 'P' suffix at the end of their model number (ex. DT-10P). These vehicles are designed to carry payloads ranging for 30 to 58 tonnes.
