Based on the data released so far, the gun (that complements a wide array of weapons that the aircraft will be able to carry), 50 kg in weight, can fire at a rate of 1,800 rounds per minute, “the best such performance for this type of weapon around.”

According to the state-run Sputnik news media outlet “another thing that makes the 9-A1-4071K so special is its autonomous water cooling system where the water inside the barrel jacket vaporizes as it heats up during operation. The 9-A1-4071K cannon can fire blast-fragmentation, incendiary and armor-piercing tracer rounds and is effective against even lightly armored ground, sea and aerial targets. The cannon can hit ground targets up to 1,800 meters away and aerial targets at a maximum distance of 1,200 meters. Flight tests of the 9A1-4071K modernized rapid-aircraft cannon were earlier conducted on the Sukhoi SU-27SM multirole jet fighter.”

UAC now gearing up for T-50 PAK FA low-rate initial production batch

The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is gearing up for the manufacture of a low-rate initial production (LRIP) batch of T-50 fifth-generation fighters (Russian acronym - PAKFA) for the delivery to the Russian Aerospace Force (RusAF), according to the Izvestia daily.

The eighth flying prototype almost meeting the military’s requirements to the fifth-generation fighter’s characteristics will take to the skies in Komsomolsk-on-Amur on June 20. Unlike the previous prototypes, the eighth one is fully outfitted with the equipment and systems spelt out by the requirements specification for the future fighter. With the advent of the eighth prototype, the configuration of the T-50 as a combat aircraft has been finalized, and the type is ready for the production for the RusAF.

At present, four more T-50s are sitting in the shops of the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant in various stages of assembly. Aircraft No. 9 will join the trials in September. The 10th and 11th airframes are in their assembly jigs, one with its fuselage mated and the other with its wing center section assembled. Both will have started their flight tests before the end of the year. In the fall, UAC will be prepared for signing a LRIP batch contract with the Defense Ministry.

In the first stage, the industry pilots that have been flying the T-50 thus far will train a cadre of military pilots on the aircraft, with the second stage of test programme flights being conducted entirely by these VKS pilots.

Current flight testing by Sukhoi of the initial T-50 aircraft has been conducted at the Gromov Flight Research Institute (LII) in Zhukovskiy. According to Russian specialists familiar with the process, these five T-50s will now be transferred to the Chkalov VKS State Flight Test Centre base No. 929 at Akhtubinsk for the joint-state trials programme.

The Russian military will name the country’s first fifth-generation fighter jet ‘Sukhoi Su-57,’ the commander of the Russian Air Force has confirmed. The aircraft was dubbed ‘PAK FA’ and ‘T-50’ during its development.

“The decision has been taken, the plane has been christened. Su-57 is what we are going to call it now,” Gen. Col. Viktor Bondarev told Zvezda, the Russian Defense Ministry’s official TV channel.

Why Russia's New Su-57 Stealth Fighter Might Be a Giant Waste of Time

Dave Majumdar

http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/why-russias-new-su-57-stealth-fighter-might-be-giant-waste-21736

Russia’s Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA fifth-generation stealth fighter has been given the designation Su-57 as it nears production.
Initially, Moscow will only buy 12 Su-57 aircraft, which are expected to be delivered in 2019. Indeed, the Russian air force is not likely to buy more than 60 of the initial version of the Su-57 in total.

“In 2019, we should begin the delivery of a pre-production batch of [T-50] planes,” United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) chief Yuri Slyusar told the TASS news agency.

One of the reasons the Russians are less than enthused at buying the initial version of the Su-57 is because the stealth fighter is currently powered by interim Saturn AL-41F1 afterburning turbofans producing 32,500lbs thrust each. That is the same engine as the existing Su-35S Flanker-E, which uses many of the same systems that the Su-57 will.

Indeed, with exception of stealth, the new Flanker offers much of the same capabilities as the new fifth-generation fighter. Thus, the Russians are unwilling to spend money on a system that offers only a marginal increase in performance in their view.

India Could Have Doubts About Russian Fifth-gen Fighter Buy | ainonline - November 8, 2017
Quote
India could be about to re-examine its decision to acquire fifth-generation fighters from Russia, after the Indian Air Force (IAF) produced a report questioning the reasoning behind the program.

A number of Russian media reports in late October stated that India will decide not to press forward with participation in the Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program. The aircraft proposed by the Russian United Aircraft-Building Corporation (OAK) is a variant of the Sukhoi Su-57/PAK-FA incorporating a long list of design changes specified by the IAF to comply with its requirements.

Both Russian print and online media and Echo Moskvy radio reported that the official IAF report has criticized the concept of continuing with the program. Among other findings, it states that the Su-57 design is compromised by being based on obsolescent technology. There are also questions about the overall cost of the program, since India would be required to commit some $6.7 billion to proceed to the next phase.

The overall assessment of the IAF report is that the FGFA would never be an aircraft in the class of the U.S. Lockheed Martin F-35 and that the maintenance costs would be prohibitively high. One of the chief concerns with regard to maintenance is that the engine currently flown in the Su-57 is the Saturn 117S/AL-41F1 design. The Indian report criticizes the engine for being too expensive to operate as it is not a “modular design.”

Russia' Su-57 fighter jet makes maiden flight with new engine | Air Recognition - 07 December 2017
Quote
Russia’s fifth-generation Su-57/T-50 PAK FA (Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation) fighter jet has performed its first flight with a second-phase engine at the Gromov Flight Research Institute in the Moscow Region, the press office of Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) said.

< snipped >

The 17-minute flight was performed by Sergei Bogdan who is a chief test pilot of the Sukhoi Company that is a UAC subsidiary. The flight was smooth and was carried out in accordance with the flight task.

The first ground start of the second-phase demonstrator engine was carried out at the Machine-Building Plant in Lytkarino in the Moscow Region in November 2016. The engine is being developed by the Lyulka Design Bureau under the supervision of General Designer and Director Yevgeny Marchukov.

According to CEO of Russia’s United Engine-Manufacturing Corporation (UEC) Alexander Artyukhov, new design solutions that have no equal in Russia’s engine-manufacturing industry were used during the production of the demonstrator engine.

The new G-suit sustains the overload longer due to higher compensation of the blood deflux from the head. In contrast to the predecessors, it has additional arm squeezing. A G-suit impedes blood deflux from the brain to the belly and legs during maneuvering.

India withdraws from FGFA project, leaving Russia to go it alone | Janes - 20 April 2018
Quote
Key Points

* India has pulled out of its 11-year collaborative programme with Russia to build a Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft
* The decision has ramifications for both the IAF and the Russian aerospace industry

< snipped >

The IAF believes that the Sukhoi Su-57 (T-50 PAK-FA) fighter, which India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) designated the Perspective Multi-Role Fighter, does not meet its requirements for stealth, combat avionics, radars and sensors. Seven FGFA prototypes are currently undergoing flight-testing in Russia, but for now there is no indication as to when the platform is likely to enter series production.

Russia to Offer China Su-57 Fifth-Generation Stealth Fighter | The Diplomat - April 02, 2019
Quote
The export variant of the Su-57, designated Su-57E, will reportedly receive export approval by Russian President Vladimir Putin in a few weeks, a senior Russian defense industry official said during a media briefing at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition in Malaysia, according to an IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly report.

“China has recently taken delivery of 24 Su-35 aircraft, and in the next two years [China] will make a decision to either procure additional Su-35s, build the Su-35 in China, or buy a fifth-generation fighter aircraft, which could be another opportunity for the Su-57E,” the Russian defense industry official was quoted as saying.

Russia continues to negotiate delivery of Su-57 PAK FA fighter to India | Air Recognition - 18 July 2019 06:46
Quote
Russia offers India to resume its participation in a joint program on developing the fifth-generation fighter jet, Deputy Director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation Vladimir Drozhzhov told reporters on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.

The Su-57 called the PAK FA [Future Air Complex for Tactical Air Forces, factory code name T-50] is Russia’s fifth-generation multirole fighter. The aircraft is designed for destroying all types of air targets, land-based and waterborne assets, monitoring the airspace far from the basement, taking out headquarters, command posts, and control systems of the enemy.

The SU-57 PAK FA can use a variety of both guided and unguided weapons, including short-, medium- and long-range air-to-air missiles, different families of guided air-to-surface missiles, and 250, 500 and 1500 kg guided air bombs (the latter from external suspension). The maximum combat weight of the aircraft is 10 tons. The radar signature is reduced by the shape of the craft and the use of reflecting and radar absorbing materials in the frame and coating as well as by employment of EW systems.

Sukhoi Begins Serial Production Of The Su-57, Meanwhile Let’s See What We Know About Russia’s 5th Generation Stealth Jet - August 1, 2019

The Su-57 features a substantially reduced Radar Cross Section compared to 4th generation Russian jets, principally in the frontal sector. It seems to be a compromise between reducing the RCS and obtaining high maneuverability and performance while maintaining large weapons bays to accommodate heavy payloads. The airframe is said to use composite materials up to the 25% of the total weight and Radar Absorbing Materials (RAM). Experts pointed out many features that could degrade the low observability such as rivets, weapon doors’, engine nacelles’ and air inlets’ shaping. Some of those problems seem to be mitigated in later prototypes and more could have been solved before the serial production.
