MANILA, Philippines — The much touted face-off between President Rodrigo Duterte and retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio may not materialize after the Chief Executive assigned his spokesperson to represent him in a debate over the issue on the Philippines’ legal victory over China’s claims in the West Philippine Sea.

Duterte has designated Atty. Harry Roque to face Carpio on whether the country may enforce the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in favor of the country, amid recent incursions of China in contested waters, which critics claimed undermined the country’s sovereignty.

This, despite that it was Duterte himself who challenged Carpio to a debate over the West Philippine Sea, which the former magistrate already accepted.

this one has a conflicting report... in other news outlet, it says "emergency landing"

and if we will follow the SOP - the UH should be grounded by now if it was indeed a "crashed"

i hope AFP or PAF can set the record straight

Air Force receives brand new Command and Control Aircraft

The Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gilbert Gapay together with the Secretary of National Defense Delfin Lorenzana and Commanding General, Philippine Air Force Lieutenant General Allen Paredes led the turn-over and blessing ceremony of the G280 Command and Control Aircraft at Clark Airbase, Pampanga on September 21, 2020.

The Gulfstream G280 will be primarily used by the Philippine Air Force to serve as a platform to transport senior leaders and commanders especially in the event of a crisis. It will also serve as an airborne post for command and control (C2) operations both by the military and the civilian government.

Aside from C2 operations, the aircraft can also be used for airborne warning system, medical evacuation, high-altitude atmospheric research, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

The new C2 aircraft was acquired under the Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program and purchased from the Gulfstream Aerospace through the Foreign Military Sales Program of the United States government with the Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group.

4 'Super Tucano' attack aircraft now in Clark Air Base

MANILA – Four out of the six new Embraer Defense and Security A-29 "Super Tucano" close-air support aircraft, which are intended to beef up the Philippine Air Force (PAF)'s close-air support capabilities, have landed in Clark Air Base, Angeles City, Pampanga on Saturday.

Department of National Defense (DND) spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said the four aircraft have landed in Clark Air Base around 1:06 p.m. while the other two are still in New Delhi, India, awaiting for clearance and would be flown to the Philippines at a later date.

Embraer company pilots flew the aircraft from the company airfield in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and made fueling stops in the Canary Islands, Portugal, Malta, Egypt, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, India, Thailand, and Vietnam before landing in the Philippines.

Andolong said Embraer pilots will train PAF pilots selected to fly the "Super Tucano" for two months as part of the agreement under the Technical Inspection and Acceptance Committee.

The A-29s were earlier scheduled to be delivered by the end of July but the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic and subsequent travel bans have skewed the delivery timetables.

The aircraft, which will be part of the PAF's 15th Strike Wing, will beef up the remaining North American Rockwell OV-10 "Bronco" attack aircraft used by the Air Force in strike missions.

"They are a welcome and much-needed replacement for the PAF's aged, close air support aircraft, and their mission versatility and capability to carry a variety of ordnance will be very useful in the field," Andolong said.

The Super Tucano is a turboprop aircraft designed for light attack, counter-insurgency, close air support, aerial reconnaissance missions in low threat environments, as well as providing pilot training.

The contract for the six aircraft is worth PHP4.968 billion and was issued in late 2017. (PNA)
