What Is a Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF)?

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/sovereign_wealth_fund.asp

A sovereign wealth fund is a state-owned investment fund comprised of money generated by the government, often derived from a country's surplus reserves. SWFs provide a benefit for a country's economy and its citizens.

The funding for a SWF can come from a variety of sources. Popular sources are surplus reserves from state-owned natural resource revenues, trade surpluses, bank reserves that may accumulate from budgeting excesses, foreign currency operations, money from privatizations, and governmental transfer payments.

In general, sovereign wealth funds usually have a targeted purpose. Some countries have sovereign wealth funds that can be similar to venture capital for the private sector.

Does the United States Have a Sovereign Wealth Fund?

The United States does not have a federal sovereign wealth fund. However, there are a number of state funds, also known as permanent funds, throughout the country that derive their wealth from a wide range of sources including fossil fuels. Some of these state funds include the Alabama Trust Fund, Texas Permanent School Fund, Texas Permanent University Fund, Wyoming Permanent Fund, New Mexico State Investment Council, and the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation.

In the United States, a permanent fund is one of the five governmental fund types established by GAAP. It is classified as a restricted true endowment fund for governments and non-profit organizations.
