Getting captured by Armed Groups
« on: November 23, 2022, 01:48:19 AM »
I want to pose this somewhat silly question if I may but if it's deemed by the Admin too silly of a question then please delete. Anyways, let me start with a scenario. You are a Filipino born and raised, immigrated abroad specifically in a NATO member country (US, UK, France, Germany, etc..), let's include Australia too and joined your new homeland's Armed Forces. You served and continue to serve well and true for a good number of years. Then on a leave/holiday to some country an armed group raided your hotel or resort and you got captured. The fanatical group has an inherent hate towards the west and its allies and are now asking each and every prisoner their Citizenship. Now the question is would you use your SERE training and 'evade' and tell them you're a Filipino or be 'Patriotic' and tell them you're an American, British, French, German, Australian etc... whichever case you might be???

First order of business is "survival".

If you are captured by a terrorist organization because of your affiliation with your adopted country -- and the terrorists found out about that affiliation because you felt a patriotic need to bring it up on conversation (e.g., brag, etc.) -- and then the organization contacts your adopted country's embassy to demand ransom or concessions, then you've just created a problem for your adopted country to solve.

Your adopted country could then send embassy staff in harm's way just to get your arse out of a sling that you put yourself in. Would you want that on your conscience . . . just to because you felt a need to self-identify?

Now with that Sir. Say that Servicemember choose "Survival" and say he/she is a Filipino citizen. Would the Philippines actually check that and if they discover the 'Lie' is there a protocol to coordinate with the adopted country and be aware of this scenario and play along or is there some foreign policy that prevents the RP gov't from doing that----asking for a friend Sir.

The AFP learned long ago that the stakes are raised if kidnappers know that a foreign national is in their clutches. When a team of International Red Cross workers went to Basilan -- against the advice of their counterparts in the Philippine National Red Cross -- and then got captured, the resulting rescue operation became a protracted and costly affair.

The core group of kidnappers was actually small. But their numbers swelled as other "enterprising" locals joined their cause in the hope of getting windfall profits from whatever ransom or aid came out of the event. That made the situation unnecessarily difficult for the Marines who had been sent for rescue.

If you don't self identify, the AFP will play along. As for other government agencies that may become aware . . .

Are you worried that the adopted country would not know that you have been captured?
