Video shows Hapilon, other Islamic militants plotting Marawi attack

Quote
It was an audacious plot sketched out in chilling detail with blue pens on the back of a paper calendar: Islamic militants in the Philippines, including one of the world’s most-wanted militant leaders, would take over a key southern city in their boldest attack to date.

With unsettling calm, they spoke of taking hostages from a school, sealing off roads, and capturing a highway “so the people will get scared.”

...

Armed Forces chief of staff Gen. Eduardo Año confirmed the identities of those present, including Hapilon, who resembles other images said to be of him, such as those on FBI wanted posters. The militants have no spokesman and do not generally issue statements.

The images show that the insurgent alliance “has this intention of not only rebellion, but actually dismembering a portion of the Philippine territory by occupying the whole of Marawi City and establishing their own Islamic state or government,” said Año.

...

Año said the insurgents had been planning to attack Marawi on May 26, the start of Ramadan in the south. But the raid cut their preparations short and triggered instant clashes. Had the assault not been pre-empted, the militants likely would have seized more territory and inflicted far more damage.

Maute patriarch transferred to Metro Manila | interaksyon - June 8, 2017
Quote
Brigadier General Gilbert Gapay, deputy commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command, said Cayamora Maute, his second wife Congan Alfonso Balauag, daughter Norhana and son-in-law Benzarali Tingao were flown out of Davao City around 9:45 p.m. on an Air Forces C-130 transport Wednesday that landed at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City.

They were “then brought to a detention facility, the location of which I cannot divulge due to security reasons,” he added.

However, a seven-vehicle convoy that included two military trucks and police and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology patrol vehicles was seen speeding towards Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City, arriving there around 12:40 a.m. Thursday.

There has been no official confirmation if the Maute patriarch was in the convoy but sources said he was taken to the “Special Intensive Care Area” of the BJMP detention facility inside Camp Bagong Diwa.

The elder Maute and his relatives were in a rental van that was stopped at a checkpoint in Troil, Davao City.

AFP now has lists of Maute Group supporters | interaksyon - June 8, 2017
Quote
MANILA, June 8 – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday announced that it has compiled two lists containing the names of more than 200 supporters of the terrorist Maute Group, the followers of which are still locked in a stalemate with government security forces in a near-siege of Marawi City located in Lanao del Sur.

The lists include local politicians, according to AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Eduardo Año.

Año told a television interview: “I cannot recall the number but I think its more than 200 names. (There are names of incumbent local) politicians, (private citizens and Maute Group members) there,” he added.

These individuals will be arrested as soon as possible, he said.

13 Marines killed in fighting with Maute | Philstar - June 10, 2017

It's the biggest single-day loss for government troops since they began fighting militants allied with the Islamic State group who seized Marawi on May 13 and are still occupying parts of the city.

Military spokesman Col. Edgard Arevalo says the Marines were killed in daylong close-quarter combat on Friday. Forty other marines were wounded.

Tanks arrive at a military camp in Iligan city to reinforce Government troops who are battling Muslim militants who laid siege in Marawi city for over a week now Wednesday, May 31, 2017 in southern Philippines. Fighting continues for the second week now between Government troops and Muslim militants with casualties on both side and civilians. AP/Bullit Marquez

13 Marines killed in fighting with Maute | Philstar - June 10,

we have the firepower including using FA-50's/AW 109's, armor, arty etc etc
we have 3000 soldiers VS 500 enemy rebels
we have new weapons from the USA just delivered
we have use precision guided weapons
we have the city evacuated reducing collateral damage
we have 90% of marawi "secured" that means 10% is only left and I heard it means only 3 barangays needs liberation
we have martial law which means writ of HC is suspended
we have tech support from the USA (may be for the drones)
we have the support and help of the MILF and MNLF, means more help that we never expected
we have the patriach's arrested and confined, whatever that can mean - may be trade it with the hostages
we have killed a lot of the maute members, 138 at last count
we have DU30 as the commander in chief, my president
we have this "news" that the Philippine flag will fly in the 4 corners of Marawi to celebrate independence day in Marawi
i know civilians are use as shields by the rebels
i know we don't want to bomb the city into ashes
i know we are in the offensive
i know there will be casualties in war
now I am not a military strategist/planner/fighter
how come its taking 2 weeks and counting to liberate this city, can't we just sweep this city like a "tsunami" wave of troops and clear it for 1 day?
and again may be im just mis-informed, talking dumb and stupid and acting like an idiot about it.
these 13 marines killed in 1 day (and also the friendly fire casualties also in 1 day) just made me more mad about this crisis (and together with 58 other soldiers/police and nearly 40 civilians too).
what did we do to the enemy that same day?
Its frustrating to know the Philippines being "at war" since the day I was born, being known as the 2nd least peaceful country in SE Asia.
God bless our troops and the Filipino people. I may be in the USA but you got my prayers and support.
forgive me about this post guys, i know, like me you want this crisis and loss of life to end ASAP.

MOUT is difficult to say the least.. the Iraqi army is still fighting to take Mosul and it has been months. Granted that the terrorists there probably number in the thousands but exponentially the force the Iraqis have there is also large. They also have firepower the AFP can only dream of (F16's, MI-35's, M1 Abrams etc.. etc..).  Another prime example would be the USMC at the 2nd battle of Fallujah against Iraqi insurgents. The full might of the US against 2k insurgents and it took them almost a month.

what saddens me is that the maute rebels took marawi in one day with 500 rebels, we should have too with 3000 troops. and again, may be im talking out of my wits. :-X  thank you for your post too Magoo. :)

Gov’t forces close in on terrorists | Inquirer.net - June 16, 2017
Quote
Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera, spokesperson for the military’s 1st Infantry Division, said government forces had gained control of key bridges in the city after street-to-street fighting in recent days.

He said the security forces were now advancing toward the inner parts of the city where about 150-200 gunmen from the Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorist groups were holed up in houses and commercial buildings.

Fighting was now confined to 10 percent of the city, or about 8.7 square kilometers, Herrera said.

The battleground constituted four of the city’s 96 barangays, he added.

“We intend to finish the fight as soon as possible,” Herrera told reporters.

The military had stopped using fighter jets and helicopter gunships to avoid injury to civilians trapped in the battle zone, but Herrera said airstrikes could be resumed if the troops on the ground needed air support.

“We have neutralized key enemy positions. [But] our options (airstrikes) are still open,” he said.

Maute uses mosques to provoke military airstrike | Philstar - June 15, 2017
Quote
LANAO DEL SUR, Philippines — Officials on Thursday warned that terrorists are deliberately holding out in mosques in Marawi City to provoke airstrikes they can hype as “sacrilegious” to trigger indignation by moderate Muslims.

Gov. Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and his constituent-Maranaw lawmaker, Zia Alonto Adiong of the 24-member Regional Assembly, separately said that the Dawlah Islamiya want the two old and historic mosques in Marawi City they are occupying leveled by bombs to trigger an outcry among neutral Muslims.

“We must not forget that they attacked and vandalized the St. Mary’s Church in Marawi City to cause friction among Christians and Muslims. We are thankful to Mindanao’s Christian communities for being sober and for not responding the way these terrorists had wanted them to react,” said Hataman, chairman of the regional peace and order council.

Adiong, spokesman of the Lanao del Sur provincial crisis management committee, said the two worship sites being occupied by Maute and Abu Sayyaf gunmen — the Bato Islamic Mosque and the Lanao Mindanao Al-Islamie Center — both have high historical and religious values to ethnic Maranaws.

Marawi crisis: ‘End is near,’ says military, as government troops close in on Maute Group | Interaksyon - June 16, 2017
Quote
After more than three weeks of pounding targets in the Islamic City of Marawi using withering heavy weapons and air strikes, the military believes the terrorist Maute Group has been substantially softened and the end to the standoff is not too far off now, so much so that on this Friday, not a single air strike needed to be scrambled.

For a change, a relative tranquility seemed to have taken over, punctuated only by sporadic exchanges on the ground as the government security forces carefully tightened the flanks around holdout enemy snipers in at least four residual enclaves.

Troops shift to clearing ops | Inquirer.net - June 17, 2017
Quote
Three bridges over Agus River, which had earlier been vulnerable to sniper fire, were now under Army control, according to Herrera.

“Enemy resistance continues to dwindle and enemy-held areas continue to get smaller as troops advance,” he said, but added that the military could not say for certain when the fighting would end.

He said at least 225 Islamic State (IS)-linked gunmen from Abu Sayyaf and Maute groups and their foreign and local allies had been killed in the nearly monthlong fighting, which also left 59 soldiers and 26 civilians dead.

The military was validating reports of the deaths of several members of the Maute clan—Omar, Madi, Otto and another, identified only by his alias, Abul, he said.

< snipped >

Troops involved in the bloodiest firefight to free Marawi in which 13 Marines last week were killed indicated that the clearing operations would be the toughest battles as the gunmen had prepositioned ammunition and even Molotov bombs.

They also were armed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) to knock down light armored vehicles and had deployed snipers armed with rifles modeled after the .50 caliber US-made Barrett.

The ill-equipped military has mostly operated against rebels in mountainous terrain or on remote islands and is unused to urban warfare.

Maute-ISIS bandits use drone in Marawi to evade pursuing soldiers | GMA news - June 19, 2017
Quote
While soldiers use drones to gather information to chase the terrorists in Marawi, members of the ISIS-inspired Maute group are also using drones to flee the military offensive in the beleaguered city.

< snipped >

Joint Task Force Marawi spokesperson Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera said the military first saw the drones of the Maute group during the first week of clashes in the city.

"During the first two weeks ng ating [skirmishes], mayroon tayong mga nakita na gumagamit din yung kalaban ng drone. Part ito ng surveillance intelligence [ng Maute group]," Herrera said.

Meanwhile, the report said soldiers in the frontline have been complaining of the foul smell of decomposing cadavers belonging to the Maute group.
