Workers ready a Philippine flag at the Emilio F. Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite on Thursday in preparation for this year’s Philippine Independence Day celebrations. In a news release on Thursday, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said that employees who will work during the regular holiday are entitled to 200 percent of their regular daily salary. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, DOLE is allowing some companies to defer the payment of holiday pay until such time that normal business operations resume. ABS-CBN News

Malacañang on Thursday said that President Rodrigo Duterte will skip this year's Independence Day commemoration in Rizal Park as he stays in Davao City and will instead be represented by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.

Japan, China, US, India extend Independence Day greetings to Philippines
Published June 12, 2020 7:30pm

Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and China’s President Xi Jinping have extended their greetings to the Filipino people on the 122nd anniversary of Philippine independence, Malacañang said Friday.

In a statement, the Palace said President Rodrigo Duterte was “profoundly honored” to receive the message of the emperor.

Naruhito’s message echoed the “beautiful harmony and goodwill heralded by his ascension to the throne last year” and was “deeply appreciated by the nation,” it added.

Xi extended his “warm wishes” to Duterte and the Filipino people during their phone conversation on Thursday, the Palace said. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his greetings during his telephone conversation with Duterte on Tuesday.

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took pride in the US-Philippine alliance, which he said was “fortified by our shared history, rich people-to-people ties, and deep bilateral cooperation.”

“As we stood together during World War II and in the global fight against terrorism, our nations are partnering again to contain and mitigate COVID-19,” he said.

“Our friendship and cooperation stand as a model for ensuring peace, stability, prosperity, and health across the Indo-Pacific.”

British envoy reads Bonifacio piece for PH Independence Day
June 12, 2020, 7:00 pm

In a one-minute video posted at the British Embassy page, Pruce reads in Filipino the first few lines of the piece:
"Aling pag-ibig pa ang hihigit kaya sa pagka-dalisay at pagka-dakila gaya ng pag-ibig sa tinubuang lupa? Aling pag-ibig pa? Wala na nga, wala."

The poem, published in 1896, is an exhortation to Filipinos to take up arms for the country's independence.
