Long Range Anti-Ship Missile
LRASM is a long range, precision-guided anti-ship missile leveraging off of the successful JASSM-ER heritage, and is designed to meet the needs of U.S. Navy and Air Force warfighters. Armed with a penetrator and blast fragmentation warhead, LRASM employs precision routing and guidance, day or night in all weather conditions. The missile employs a multi-modal sensor suite, weapon data link, and enhanced digital anti-jam Global Positioning System to detect and destroy specific targets within a group of numerous ships at sea.
 
Background
Lockheed Martin is currently executing on the Accelerated Acquisition contract for the LRASM Deployment Office. This contract is further maturing the technologies that will be delivered as an early operational capability in LRASM for the USAF B-1B and USN F/A-18E/F in 2018 and 2019 respectively. This operational capability will provide our warfighter with the solution to their anti-surface warfare capability gap. We have begun the integration efforts onto the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Fit and mass properties checks were conducted at Pax River Naval Base with the U.S. Navy and captive-carry flight tests took place in 4Q15. We are also investing company funds to reduce risk of a surface-launch variant that will be used by the VLS currently in the fleet.

The US Air Force (USAF) has operationally debuted its Lockheed Martin AGM-158B Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile - Extended Range (JASSM-ER) missile during allied weapons strikes against Syrian chemical weapons research and storage facilities.

A total of 19 JASSM-ER munitions were launched from two USAF B-1B Lancer strategic bomber aircraft on 13-14 April. The USAF declared full operational capability of the JASSM-ER on the B-1B – which can accommodate 24 up to JASSM-ERs in its internal weapons stores – in December 2014.

Externally identical in mold line and size to the baseline AGM-158A JASSM, JASSM-ER is 4.26 m in length, 450 mm in height, >635 mm in width, with a deployed wing span – as currently configured – of 2.7 m. Both variants share 70% of their hardware and 95% of their software.

Powered by a Williams International F107-WR-105 turbofan engine – which replaces the Teledyne J402-100 turbojet engine in the baseline AGM-158A – and with an added fuel capacity that does not impact the payload or electronics capability, the JASSM-ER solution extends the missile’s range from >200 nm to >500 nm.

Surface Navy 2019: Lockheed Martin readies for LRASM flight tests on board USN’s F/A-18 | Janes - 16 January 2019

Now that the US Air Force (USAF) has declared the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) operational for the B-1B Lancer bomber, weapons prime contractor Lockheed Martin is focusing on getting the LRASM operational for the US Navy's (USN's) F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet.

Lockheed Martin has conducted a number of captive carry flights already and will be taking other steps to get to flight certification, Alan Jackson, vice-president of strike systems for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, told Jane's .

In the first quarter of 2019 flight tests will begin, he added.

Lockheed awarded contract for LRASM work

This order will result in the company providing engineering, testing, product support and ancillary support to update the current LRASM components and systems under the requirements of the Offensive Anti-Surface Warfare Increment 1 Capability Description Document, and work will be carried out at various sites across the US, and is expected to complete in November 2022.

$40 million was allocated at the time of award, and the order is being contracted by the Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River in Maryland.

Developed and fielded under an accelerated programme to meet the requirements of Offensive Anti-surface Warfare (OASuW) Increment 1 programme, LRASM is a 2,400 lb (1,088.6 kg) high-subsonic conventional precision-guided standoff anti-ship missile that leverages the basic design of the AGM-158B Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile - Extended Range (JASSM-ER) weapon system. With a stated air-launched range of ‘greater than 200 n miles’ (370 km), the AGM-158C retains the JASSM-ER 1,000 lb penetrator/blast fragmentation warhead, but introduces a multimode sensor/seeker package – which combines a passive radio frequency long range sensor (developed by BAE Systems) for wide area target acquisition and an imaging infrared seeker for terminal targeting – a weapon data link L-Band Unit (LBU) supplied by ViaSat, and an enhanced digital anti-jam GPS.

This effort, which will run from January 2021 through January 2026, should also include 500 to 2,000 lb class of Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) variants, Mk62/63/65 mines, Small Diameter Bomb (SDB-II), Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD), Bomb Rack Unit BRU-55, and Universal Armament Interface (UAI).

U.S. Navy’s P-8A Poseidon currently deploy AGM-84D Block 1C Harpoon anti-ship missiles for their anti-surface warfare missions. Incremental future upgrades include the AGM-84 Harpoon II+ variant which brings GPS and a data link that allows the shooter to change the missile’s target in flight. The venerable (and world famous) Harpoon will have to be replaced, eventually, at some point in the future, as is already the case on surface ships (with the Naval Strike Missile selected by the U.S. Navy for new programs such as the LCS and FFG(X)).
