In the wake of the Green Aura incident near Panatag shoal, are DFA Secretary Locsin's concerns really valid? What can China really do to Filipino Mariners?

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Monday warned of risking the employment and livelihood of some 400,000 Filipino mariners should they be embroiled in the maritime dispute in the South China Sea.

Locsin’s statement was in response to criticisms against the Duterte administration’s alleged lack of response to the reported harassment of a Greek-owned oil tanker by a “Chinese naval war vessel” near the Scarborough Shoal on September 30.

Filipino mariner, Captain Manolo Ebora was manning the Liberian-flagged M/T Green Aura when the incident occurred near the Scarborough Shoal or Bajo de Masinloc, a group of islands, reefs, and atolls located some 120 nautical miles from Masinloc, Zambales.

“We stick our noses in and 400,000 Filipino mariners get embroiled in a maritime issue about which our only interest is the safety of the parts of the crew who just happen to be Filipino and were not harmed,” Locsin said in a text message sent to Presidential Legal Counsel and Spokesman Salvador Panelo.
