In late July images appeared of a new prototype with the serial number 783, said by Chinese observers to indicate the third prototype, while other sources note that a fourth prototype may be in advanced stages of construction. These sources also suggest a service entry date of 2017, though this would be rather early for such a major Chinese aircraft programme.

Early service Y-20s would most likely be powered by the 12-ton thrust Russian Perm/Soloviev D-30KP-2 turbofans that are powering its prototypes. An indigenous high bypass turbofan has been flying on an Ilyushin Il-76 engine test bed aircraft for over a year. This engine is thought to be the 14-ton thrust WS-20, which would allow the Y-20 to achieve its maximum cargo capacity of 66 tons.

The photographs show that two of the six Xian Aircraft Corporation (XAC) Y-20As that arrived on 13 January at the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport carrying medical reinforcements and supplies to help against the outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus in the Wuhan area, bearing serial numbers 20041 and 20042.

Five-digit serial numbers adhering to the format 20x4x indicate that the platforms bearing them are operated by the 13th Transport Division (37th Air Regiment) based at Kaifeng in China's Henan Province

China’s Y-20 aircraft capable of transporting two Type 15 lightweight tanks, claims state media
09 April 2020

Chinese official sources put the range of the aircraft, which the state-owned Global Times newspaper claims is also capable of transporting one 52,000-54,000-tonne Type 99A-series main battle tank, at 4,000 km at maximum payload.

The Type 15 lightweight tank, which officially entered service with the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) in 2018, is believed to weigh 33 tonnes in its basic configuration. This may increase to 36 tonnes if an improved explosive reactive armour package is added.

The Global Times quoted Fu Qianshao, a Chinese air defence expert, as saying that "multiple Y-20s can transport a mixture of Type 15s, Type 99As and other kinds of armoured vehicles, leading to a significant improvement in China's long-range rapid deployment" and strategic transport capability. The four-turbofan Y-20 officially entered service with the PLA Air Force in 2016.

The Type 15, which is armed with a 105 mm gun, is protected against hand-held anti-tank weapons. The gun is thought to be capable of firing an armour-piercing, fin-stabilised, discarding sabot (APFSDS) round that is probably capable of penetrating 500 mm of armour from typical combat ranges.

The main armament of the Type 15 consists of one 105 mm rifled gun with thermal sleeve and fume extractor which has a maximum firing range of 3,000m. The main armament also includes an automatic loading system. The empty cartridge cases are ejected via a small hatch located at the rear of the turret.

Second armament of the VT5 includes one remotely operated weapon station mounted on the roof of the turret which is armed with a 12.7mm machine gun and one 40mm automatic grenade launcher.
