China Is Going Bananas for Bananas

Chinese consumers are buying more bananas from abroad than ever before as an increasingly health conscious middle class help propel the fruit’s popularity.

Imports of bananas surged to a record 227,199 tons in May, according to China’s general administration of customs. That helped lift total shipments of fruits and nuts to 720,000 tons, an almost 8-fold increase from the same period last year.

Restrained by limited farmland and a destructive banana fungus known as the Panama disease, China has been increasing its reliance on supplies from Southeast Asia and South America. Demand for bananas is being encouraged by rising incomes and the increasing popularity of diets in China, including for use in smoothies and as banana chips.

The banana market is an important market in China, where the annual production volume of bananas is huge. Imported bananas further add to the trade volume. Despite large supply volumes, trade in the banana market is smooth. Consumers continue to increase their demand for bananas, because they are an easy snack fruit rich in nutrients and vitamins.

One banana importer shared his views on the current market conditions. He said: "The most important banana brands in the Chinese market are Dole, Goodfarmer, Unifruiti, Sophia, and Delta, as well as a number of domestic brands. The competition between traders of different brands is fierce and grows more intense every day. Most imported bananas come from the Philippines, which dominates the market. Second in line is Ecuador, followed by Thailand. The Chinese banana industry has not yet developed large-scale, commercial brands."

"Prices of imported bananas rise in China"
Publication date: 7/4/2019

Currently, the Chinese banana market is very active. The local banana season is underway, and large volumes of bananas from other countries, such as the Philippines and Ecuador, are also being marketed batch after batch. It has been reported that the volume of imported bananas has increased significantly in the past few weeks. “The volume of banana imports this year has indeed increased a lot compared to last year. I believe this may be due to the fact that the quality and taste of imported bananas are good. For example, the Philippines can supply consistent and high-quality bananas throughout the year, and these bananas better meet the needs of Chinese consumers for high-quality fruit. This may be the reason why banana imports this year have increased compared with other years." Mr. Hu, a banana grower and retailer shared.
