SHALDAG Fast Patrol Craft

One of the ISL vessels currently in highest demand, the SHALDAG FPB was designed in the late 1990s, integrating valuable improvements created by Israeli defense experts in response to real-life security challenges.

The SHALDAG is most valued for security tasks where high intercept speeds and easy maneuverability are required. In addition, the vessel is equipped with highly advanced weapons systems, produced by world-recognized Israeli designers.

The combat-proven success of this unique ISL craft was quickly established with the Israeli Navy, attracting the attention of many other naval forces.

IMDEX 2019: Israel Shipyards integrates SPIKE ER missile system on Shaldag Mk II
16 May 2019

To accommodate the missile launcher system, several minor modifications have been done to the Shaldag Mk II's original configuration, especially in the aft section. Most noticeable of these is the doing away with the vessel's ability to carry rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs), to make space for the Typhoon MLS-ER launcher.

The Shaldag Mk II features an overall length of 24.8 m, a maximum beam of 6 m, and a maximum draught of 1.2 m. The interceptor displaces about 58 tonnes, and is powered by MTU engines in the original configuration. It is propelled by waterjets, and can attain a maximum speed of over 40 kt with a standard range of 650 n miles at 32 kt.

Besides Spike ER missiles, other weapons that can go onboard the Shaldag Mk II include remotely controlled weapon stations (RCWSs) of up to 30 mm in calibre, 20-33 mm twin or single-barrelled standalone guns, or 7.62 mm machine guns.

Meanwhile, the yard is building more of its Shaldag fast patrol craft. Shaldag variants - Mk II, III, IV, and V - are broken down by size to meet user-specific needs. The Israeli Navy, for example, typically wants small and fast vessels that can be operated by younger sailors.

So far 33 Shaldags have been sold around the world. According to a briefing presented by Latsav, the Mk II, which is used in Africa and South America, is 25.3 m long, has a 650 n mile range, 45 kt top speed, and displaces about 58 tonnes; the Mk III, which is used by the Israeli Navy, is 26.3 m long, has a 700 n mile range, 45 kt top speed, and displaces about 72 tonnes; the Mk IV, which is used by Romanian police, is 26.3 m long, has a 700 n mile range, 45 kt top speed, and displaces 72 tonnes; and the Mk V, which is used in Eastern Europe, is 32.6 m long, has a 1,000 n mile range, 40 kt top speed, displaces 95 tonnes.
