PN to conduct PASSEX with departing Russian ships

http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=1&sid=&nid=1&rid=952873

MANILA, Jan. 5 (PNA) -- The Philippine Navy (PN) will conduct a "passing exercise" (PASSEX) manuever with the two Russian naval vessels once they formally depart from Pier 15, Manila South Harbor on Saturday.

This was confirmed by PN spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna in an interview Thursday.

The PASSEX is part of the send-off ceremonies where visiting naval ships are given honors.

"Yes, that's part of (the) send-off ceremony and naval customs and tradition wherein we render PASSEX to any visiting navy. We have to comunicate thru voice radio and BRP Rajah Humabon (FF-11) will do the task," he added.

The BRP Rajah Humabon is the same ship which met the anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Tributs and oil tanker Buris Butoma during their arrival off Corregidor Island on Monday.

PASSEX will also provide PN and Russian naval units the chance to conduct some maneuvering and communication exercises.
The same was confirmed by Russian Pacific Fleet flotilla deputy commander Rear Admiral Eduard Mikhailov.

"These maneuevers will take place on Jan. 7 when we start our route from the Port of Manila there will be exercises and communication and manuevering in the territorial waters of the Philippines," he added. (PNA)

A Japanese anti-submarine destroyer arrived in Manila Monday for a two-day goodwill visit and replenishment of supply from a mission in the ASEAN International Fleet Review.

Navy spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna said  their vessel BRP Rajah Humabon (PF11) rendered customary meeting procedures at Corregidor Island and escorted a Japan Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessel JS ONAMI (DD-111) to its designated anchorage area.

Navy representatives accorded the visiting navy a welcome ceremony upon arrival followed by a port briefing related to health and security aboard JS ONAMI.

PH Navy’s oldest warship fades away
By: Frances Mangosing - Reporter

The Philippine Navy’s oldest warship BRP Rajah Humabon (PS-11), which rendered almost four decades of service, was decommissioned on Thursday at a naval base in Sangley Point, Cavite.

The former flagship started its career as the US Navy destroyer escort USS Atherton during World War II, patrolling the Atlantic in the 1940s. It was decommissioned in 1945 and was transferred to the Japanese government as JDS Hatsuhi. It was later sold to the Philippines in 1978 and was commissioned into service in 1980 after undergoing extensive refit in South Korea.

Philippine Fleet spokesman Lt. Sahirul Taib said former commanding officers who had served aboard BRP Humabon attended the decommissioning ceremony.

The PS-11 (former PF-11) served as the Philippine Navy’s flagship from 1980 until the arrival of Del-Pilar class warships from the US in 2011.

Taib said part of BRP Humabon’s notable deployments include ferrying the Philippine contingent of the UN Peacekeeping Force in East Timor in 2000. It also ferried ammunition  at the height of offensives against Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Abubakar in the same year.

In recent years, it also patrolled the Scarborough Shoal (Panatag Shoal) in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) amid rising tensions in 2011.

Prior to its retirement, it was operating as a ceremonial ship for welcoming visiting foreign warships in Manila Bay.

BRP Humabon will become a part of the Philippine Navy museum in Sangley in due time, Taib said.

“Visitors could tour around the ship in the future. It has become a part of history with its accomplishments,” he said.
