(CNN)A former Pentagon official who led a recently revealed government program to research potential UFOs said Monday evening that he believes there is evidence of alien life reaching Earth.< snipped >A pair of news reports in The New York Times and Politico over the weekend said the effort, the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, was begun largely at the behest of then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, who helped shore up funding for it after speaking to a friend and political donor who owns an aerospace company and has said he believes in the existence of aliens.Elizondo told The New York Times he resigned from the Department of Defense in October in protest over what he called excessive secrecy surrounding the program and internal opposition to it after funding for the effort ended in 2012.Elizondo said Monday that he could not speak on behalf of the government, but he strongly implied there was evidence that stopped him from ruling out the possibility that alien aircraft visited Earth."These aircraft -- we'll call them aircraft -- are displaying characteristics that are not currently within the US inventory nor in any foreign inventory that we are aware of," Elizondo said of objects they researched.He said the program sought to identify what had been seen, either through tools or eyewitness reports, and then "ascertain and determine if that information is a potential threat to national security.""We found a lot," Elizondo said.The former Pentagon official said they identified "anomalous" aircraft that were "seemingly defying the laws of aerodynamics.""Things that don't have any obvious flight services, any obvious forms of propulsion, and maneuvering in ways that include extreme maneuverability beyond, I would submit, the healthy G-forces of a human or anything biological," Elizondo said.

One pilot yelled, “Got it!”According to the news report, the US Navy isn’t offering an explanation—or at least not publicly—for exactly what the object was. But the service is confirming the authenticity of the video and two others taken from its planes in 2004 and 2015.“The release of the videos, which have been circulating online and in news reports, was not authorized,” a US Navy official said. But the footage has prompted the US Navy to publicly discuss an ongoing investigation into sightings by its pilots of what it describes as unidentified aerial phenomena or UAPs in US airspace.This is the first time I have learned that a US military agency has officially acknowledged the authenticity of unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings by its pilots.In 1952, the US Air Force conducted systematic studies of unidentified flying objects until it was discontinued in January 1970. The Condon Report, which was based on such studies, concluded that “there was no evidence that sightings represented technological developments or principles beyond the range of modern scientific knowledge and there was no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as ‘unidentified’ were extraterrestrial vehicles.”‘Misidentifications’By the time Project Blue Book ended, it had collected 12,618 UFO reports. It concluded, “Most of them were misidentifications of natural phenomena (clouds, stars, etc.) or conventional aircraft on secret missions. A small percentage of UFO reports were classified as unexplained, even under stringent analysis.”I believe that Project Blue Book investigated only sightings of UFOs in the United States territory, but hundreds of thousands of UFOs have been reported all over the world and witnessed, perhaps, by millions of people. I was wondering, could all these people be wrong or hallucinating?Why did such sightings proliferate only after the atomic bomb was exploded in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Why are many sightings reported near military installations and nuclear power storage facilities?
