FINMECCANICA SIGNS CONTRACT WORTH OVER 100 MILLION EUROS WITH THE PHILIPPINE NAVY FOR AGUSTAWESTLAND AW159 HELICOPTERS

  • Finmeccanica signs contract worth over 100 million euros with the Philippine Navy for AgustaWestland AW159 helicopters
  • The helicopters will be delivered in 2018 and will perform anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare primary missions
  • The contract also includes support and training package
  • The Philippine order adds to those in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea, bringing the total orders for AW159s to 72
  • The most advanced helicopter today available for maritime and naval operations in the most modern and challenging scenarios

Finmeccanica has been awarded a contract, valued at over 100 million euros, to supply the Philippine Navy with two AgustaWestland AW159 helicopters. The aircraft will be built and delivered from the Finmeccanica Helicopter Division’s Yeovil plant, in the United Kingdom, in 2018. The order includes training and multi-year support and adds to those by the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea. It is a testament to the long standing relationship between the Philippine Armed Forces and Finmeccanica following previous aeronautics and helicopter programmes.

The two helicopters will be equipped with sophisticated state-of-the-art mission equipment and sensors, primarily dedicated to anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare roles. The helicopters will also be capable of performing other roles including search and rescue, maritime security and maritime surveillance.

Navy ASW helis to be armed with Spike NLOS missiles

MANILA, March 26 (PNA) -- The Philippine Navy (PN)'s first two anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters will be armed with Spike NLOS missiles giving it a capability to engage hostile vessels beyond visual range.

The said weapon manufactured by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. NLOS is short for "non-line of sight". It was originally designed to destroy tanks.

PN spokesperson Capt. Lincuna said these helicopters are the AgustaWestland AW-159 "Wildcats" which are scheduled to be delivered by 2018.

The Department of National Defense signed a contract with AugustaWestland, now Leonardo, to buy two AW-159 ASW helicopters for PHP5.362 billion, last year.

It will be deployed aboard the two frigates the Philippines has ordered from South Korea worth PHP16 billion.

Lincuna said the PN will be using Spike NLOS as a anti-ship weapon due to its claimed range of 25 kilometers.

"The missile has a built-in camera that allows it to be operated day or night," the PN spokesperson.

"The Spike NLOS weapon system can be operated in either direct attack or mid-course navigation based on target coordinates only. These modes enable defeat of long-range hidden targets, with pinpoint precision, damage assessment and the obtaining of real-time intelligence," weapon manufacturer Rafael said in its website.

Lincuna said the missiles will complement the AW-159s' detection and tracking equipment.

"The helicopters will be a full package, from detection, tracking, up to prosecution," he said. (PNA)

(NewsFeature) PN soon-to-have weapons platform capable of neutralizing surface ships, submarines

MANILA, March 31 (PNA) -- For the first time in decades, the Philippine Navy (PN), with the arrival of its two AgustaWestland AW-159 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters, will be in possession of platform capable of detecting, locating and if needed, prosecuting hostile underwater contacts.

Prosecuting in military parlance means the destruction or neutralization of targets deemed hostile by the military.

The AW-159 ASW helicopters, also known as the "Wildcat" is expected to join the fleet by next year, PN spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna said.

He said these aircraft will be deployed aboard the two missile-armed frigates, those contract was bagged by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries last year.

"Once the AW-159 arrives, the PN will now have the capability to detect, locate and if necessary prosecute hostile surface and sub-surface targets," Lincuna stressed.

The AW-159 (previously called the Future Lynx and Lynx Wildcat) is an improved version of the Westland Super Lynx military helicopter.

It is ordered for the British Army and the United Kingdom's Royal Navy.

It has a crew of two, has a maximum speed of 291 km/h (181 mph), range of 777 km (483 miles), ferry range of 963 km (598 miles) and an endurance of one and a-half hours (fours hours and 30 minutes if fitted with auxiliary fuel)

The AW-159 is fitted with a variety of weapons capable of dealing with surface ships and submarines.

One of the armaments, the PN "Wildcat" will be armed with is the Spike NLOS missiles giving it a capability to engage hostile vessels beyond visual range.

The said weapon is manufactured by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. NLOS is short for "non-line of sight". It was originally designed to destroy tanks.

SIPRI isn't 101% accurate . . . but it has a pretty good batting average.

This is what the registers report

The shape of things to come

South Korea flexes new AW159 helicopter capability in anti-submarine drills
Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Navy International
07 February 2017

http://www.janes.com/article/67533/south-korea-flexes-new-aw159-helicopter-capability-in-anti-submarine-drills

In a demonstration of its newly attained submarine prosecution capabilities, the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has deployed its AW159 helicopters on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) drills for the first time, the service confirmed with Jane's on 7 February.

The exercises, which included the deployment of the helicopter's dipping sonar system, were conducted with a squadron of four airframes near the port of Busan, and tested helicopters' ability to interoperate with its surface ships to jointly prosecute submarines, said the service.

South Korea announced the acquisition of eight AW159 helicopters under the country's Maritime Operational Helicopter programme in 2013. The first batch of four helicopters was delivered in June 2016, while a subsequent batch of four was handed over by Leonardo's Helicopter Division in November the same year.

The platform is equipped with Thales' FLASH Compact Sonics low-frequency active dipping sonar and acoustic processing suite, and the Seaspray 7000E active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar supplied by Selex. Weapons that can be deployed from the helicopter include the K745 Cheong Sangeo (Blue Shark) lightweight torpedo, and depth charges.

PH Navy: Delivery of 2 anti-sub helicopters set in March 2019

By Priam Nepomuceno July 24, 2018, 3:58 pm

MANILA -- The Philippine Navy (PN) will receive its first two anti-submarine helicopters, AgustaWestland AW159 "Wildcat", in March next year.

"Siguro sa March ang delivery (The delivery is probably in March 2019)," PN flag-officer-in-command Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad said when asked about the delivery dates for the two aircraft, during an interview with reporters Monday.

The AW159s, to be sourced from the Anglo-Italian aircraft manufacturer AgustaWestland, will help the two missile-armed frigates being constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries for PHP18 billion, against submarine attacks.

"Itong anti-submarine warfare will (help the frigates against submarine attacks) kasi yun submarine ang magpapalubog ng mga barko (These anti-submarine helicopters will help the frigates against submarine attacks because submarines sink ships). So this will help in the defense of the frigates," Empedrad added.

The contract for the two anti-submarine helicopters is worth PHP5.4 billion and includes munition, mission essential equipment, and integrated logistic support. The AW159, previously called the Future Lynx and Lynx Wildcat, is an improved version of the Westland Super Lynx military helicopter.

The helicopter, which has been ordered for the Royal Navy and British Army, is capable of speeds of 291 km/h, has a range of 777 km., a ferry range of 963 km., and an endurance of one-and-a-half hours (four hours and 30 minutes if fitted with auxiliary fuel).

The AW159 can be fitted with forward firing CRV7 rockets and machine guns, pintle-mounted machine gun, Sea Skua missiles, and Sting-Ray torpedoes and depth charges. (PNA)
