Zata added that the PN will gain more capability to operate modern naval weaponry with the arrival of the Pohang-class frigate, donated by the Republic of Korea (ROK), next year.

"The Pohang-class frigate from ROK will also be delivered by next year equipped with a better weapons system that the Navy can already use as it prepares for the delivery of the two purposely-built frigates starting 2020," he stressed.

The Pohang-class frigate is equipped with a primary and secondary gun systems, sensors and torpedoes for anti-submarine missions as well as sensors for anti-air operations, Zata revealed.

BRP Gregorio del Pilar to be 'available' by yearend
By Priam Nepomuceno  January 9, 2019, 11:02 am

http://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1058345

MANILA -- The Philippine Navy (PN) flagship BRP Gregorio del Pilar (FF-15), which ran aground off Hasa-Hasa Shoal last August, is expected to be available for operations before the end of 2019.

< Edited >

For the moment, the patrol and other duties of BRP Gregorio Del Pilar are being carried by her two sister ships, the BRP Ramon Alcaraz (FF-16) and BRP Andres Bonifacio (FF-17).

"Okay lang naman 'yung dalawa, gumagana naman yung dalawa (These two ships are fine. They are functional). And then this March, makukuha na natin 'yung (we will get the) (Pohang-class) corvette (donated) by South Korea so baka ma-deliver na yun (it might be delivered). Papunta na kasi 'yung personnel natin for (Our personnel will be going there for) training by January, so kung March or April matatapos ('yung training) meron na tayong gagamitin (If the training ends by March or April, we will have something to use)," Empedrad stressed.

Also, the South Korean ship will be coming to the PN with intact guns and sonar detection systems, which are needed badly by the Navy, are included in the transfer, he added.

New & Exclusive @ MaxDefense Philippines blogs: we update our discussions on Philippines Navy's first Pohang-class Corvette, which will be named BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39), as it inches closer to delivery after a very long, self-inflicted delay.

From PEFTOK Memorial FB Page

PAST IS THE FUTURE: POHANG CLASS CORVETTE ROKS CHUNGJU NOW BRP CONRADO YAP (PS-39)

BRP CONRADO YAP (PG-840)

Commissioned into the Philippine Navy on 10 June 1993,they are known as the "Haeksang/Schoolboy" Patrol Gunboat in the South Korean Navy She was built by Korea SB & Eng., Masan, and Korea Tacoma SY, Chinhae.

Her namesake is CPT CONRADO D YAP Philippine Army 0-1914 of the Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) who made the ultimate sacrifice at Yultong, Yeoncheon Province, Republic of Korea on 23 April 1951. The famous battle during the Third Chinese Communist Spring Offensive in the Korean War that etched the courage and gallantry of the Filipino Soldier when the 900- Strong 10th Battalion Combat Team of the Philippine Army defeated the 12th Chinese Army of 40,000 men under Marshall Zhang Zhou Yi.

12 units of the type were inducted into the Philippine Fleet, with two remaining in active duty as of the present. All 12 ships were named after Filipino Soldiers who served during the Korean War. They were sold to the Philippines for $100. They are classified as Fast Attack Craft Patrol (FACP) in PN service due to their speed.

As part of the then Assault Craft Force of the Philippine Fleet, PG-840 conducted countless hours of patrolling the country's vast territorial waters. She served the Navy well for 8 years before being decommissioned on 07 June 2001...

The former Pohang Class Corvette ROKS ChungJu is now named BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39).

SoKor to turn over Pohang-class corvette to PH Navy in June
By Priam Nepomuceno  February 28, 2019, 12:01 pm

http://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1063151?fbclid=IwAR1oKd1wHu-nXV_ZcgD_tMY9P2tgQu5m1bWzrNKx1EQs86ZMF8VFPSPj6fg

MANILA -- The Pohang-class corvette, donated by the South Korean government to the country, will be formally turned over to the Philippine Navy (PN) on the third week of June.

This was bared by Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong when sought for updates on the vessel Thursday.

He said this is due to the fact dry-docking and repairs of the ship are expected to be completed by the second week of June.

"The dry-docking and other related repairs of (the) 'Pohang' corvette are set to be completed in the second week of June, and turnover is estimated to be by the third week of the same month," Andolong said in message to the Philippine News Agency

He added that the sailing crew of the ship left the Philippines for South Korea last February 11 to begin training on the ship's systems.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the South Korean-donated vessel will be named after Korean War hero and Medal of Valor awardee, Captain Conrado Yap.

Yap, a member of the 10th Battalion Combat Team, was killed in the Battle of Yultong in April 23, 1951 where he made a counter-attack to secure an exposed Filipino unit, led by Lt. Jose Artiaga, then under attack by superior number of Chinese infantry. Both officers were killed in the battle.

Yap was also honored by the PN by naming an entire class of patrol craft after him in 1993.

Pohang class is a type of general-purpose corvette -- smallest class of vessel considered as a warship -- operated by the South Korean Navy. Around 24 were built during the late Cold War and post-Cold War period.

These ships are armed with a variety of anti-sub, anti-ship, and anti-air weapons with their accompanying sensor gear and are capable of running to speeds up to 32 knots. (PNA)
