BRP DAVAO DEL SUR (LD602) sails to the North! Once again, LD602 participated in an endeavor asserting our territorial sovereignty. Imbued with the sense of Bayanihan, a Sealift Mission was conducted to transport the materials needed for the completion of the Mavulis Project; and to ferry the different stakeholders to the Handover Ceremony in the northernmost island of the Philippines, the Mavulis Island (Y’Ami), Batanes.

The Mavulis Project is a shared initiative among various stakeholders to include the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) and the Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Batanes Local Government Units (LGUs), and private companies and entities. The waters surrounding the Batanes Islands is a traditional fishing ground, however being prone to inclement weather and with mostly remote islands in the area, fishing is very challenging. The Mavulis Island is also located in the Bashi Channel, a major waterway for shipping and where major communication lines in South East Asia are laid. Hence, the project included the construction of a Fishermen’s Shelter, helipads, and a lighthouse. The construction was completed on 26 May 2019 and was turned-over by NOLCOM to the Batanes LGUs through a ceremony held on 27 May 2019. Future projects were lined up for the development of the said area.

In conjunction with this mission, LD602 also conducted maritime patrols in the Luzon Strait to ensure safety of navigation and the country’s sovereign rights in the northernmost frontier.
