BRP Davao del Sur LD602 added 21 new photos from May 26 to the album: MAVULIS PROJECT HANDOVER CEREMONY

BRP DAVAO DEL SUR (LD602) sails to the North! Once again, LD602 participated in an endeavor asserting our territorial sovereignty. Imbued with the sense of Bayanihan, a Sealift Mission was conducted to transport the materials needed for the completion of the Mavulis Project; and to ferry the different stakeholders to the Handover Ceremony in the northernmost island of the Philippines, the Mavulis Island (Y’Ami), Batanes.

The Mavulis Project is a shared initiative among various stakeholders to include the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) and the Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Batanes Local Government Units (LGUs), and private companies and entities. The waters surrounding the Batanes Islands is a traditional fishing ground, however being prone to inclement weather and with mostly remote islands in the area, fishing is very challenging. The Mavulis Island is also located in the Bashi Channel, a major waterway for shipping and where major communication lines in South East Asia are laid. Hence, the project included the construction of a Fishermen’s Shelter, helipads, and a lighthouse. The construction was completed on 26 May 2019 and was turned-over by NOLCOM to the Batanes LGUs through a ceremony held on 27 May 2019. Future projects were lined up for the development of the said area.

In conjunction with this mission, LD602 also conducted maritime patrols in the Luzon Strait to ensure safety of navigation and the country’s sovereign rights in the northernmost frontier.

BRP DAVAO DEL SUR (LD602) welcomes to Philippine waters contingents of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force Escort Flotilla 1 (JMSDF EF1) during a Meeting Engagement at the vicinity of Cagayan de Sulu, Tawi Tawi on 28 June 2019. The JMSDF EF1 includes vessels JS IZUMO (DDH-183), JS MURASAME (DD-101) and JS AKEBONO (DD-108) with SH-60K patrol helicopters onboard.

The customary meeting procedure accorded by LD602 to the flotilla is a prime opportunity for the PN and JMSDF to enhance interoperability and strengthen relationship among like-minded Navies to promote peace and stability in the region. More importantly, it gave the JMSDF a glimpse of Filipino hospitality.

JMSDF EF1 is scheduled to call on the Port of Subic this weekend and further interact with the personnel of the PN. This further highlights the continuing commitment between the two Navies towards the peaceful use of the seas.

South Korea-donated PH Navy ship set to sail home August 5
By Priam Nepomuceno  August 1, 2019, 12:55 pm

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1076670

MANILA -- The BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39), formerly the South Korean Pohang-class corvette "Chungju" (PCC-762), will sail to the Philippines shortly after handover ceremonies on August 5.

This was disclosed by Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana when sought for updates on the ship Thursday.

"Yes, the BRP Conrado Yap, a Pohang-class donated by the South Korean government will be handed over to the FOIC (flag officer in command, Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad), (Philippine) Navy on August 5 and will sail for the Philippines immediately thereafter. This is a second-hand, refurbished frigate," he said in a message to the Philippine News Agency.

The South Korean vessel was formally donated to the Philippines in 2014.

In another message, PN spokesperson Captain Jonathan Zata said the BRP Conrado Yap is now undergoing preparations to sail home at Jinhae, Gyeongsang-namdo, South Korea.

He did not give the exact departure time of the ship from South Korea or the port of arrival of the vessel for security reasons.

However, Zata said the BRP Conrado Yap will be escorted home by the strategic sealift vessel, BRP Davao Del Sur (LD-602), which is now on its way to South Korea after attending Russian Navy Day celebrations in Vladivostok last week.

"(BRP) Davao Del Sur will sail with her (on the way home). She is on her way now (to South Korea)," he added. Upon arrival and commissioning by the PN, the BRP Conrado Yap will boost the Navy's anti-submarine and anti-surface capabilities.

The ship was named Conrado Yap to uphold the legacy of a gallant Filipino military leader, who served in the Korean War as part of the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea.

Yap was a captain in the Philippine Army and considered as the most decorated Filipino soldier during the Korean War.

He posthumously received a Philippine Medal of Valor, the country's highest military honor, as well as a US Distinguished Service Cross, for gallantry in action as part of the Tank Company, 10th Battalion Combat Team (10th BCT), Philippine Army.

The ship measures 88.3 meters long, with a beam of 10 meters and draft of 2.9 meters. Displacement is at 1,216 tons full load. The ship is rated for a crew of 118 personnel and can sustain operational presence for 20 days.

The vessel's Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion configuration of Motor Transport Unit (MTU) diesel engines and LM2500 gas turbine with controllable pitch propellers (CPP) enable the ship to move to a maximum speed of 25 knots to a distance of 4,000 nautical miles.

The ship is armed with two Oto Melara 76mm Oto Melara main guns, a 30mm automatic cannons, anti-submarine torpedoes and variety of sensors, including sonars, and radars. (PNA)

AFP amphibious assault vehicles join ship-to-shore exercise
September 21, 2019, 8:41 pm

The new AAVs were the highlight of the amphibious exercise which is one of the main joint interoperability exercises conducted under the AFP Joint Exercise (AJEX) "DAGIT-PA".

The activity seeks to enhance joint operations among ground, naval and aviation assets of the AFP.

The amphibious operations demonstrated the military’s ability to seize a littoral objective in a scenario of an island retake.

During the activity, a team of Marine infantry and reservists launched the AAVs from Philippine Navy landing dock, BRP Davao del Sur (LD-602).

This enabled the team of Marines to land and conduct operations to retake the island. Meanwhile, the Philippine Air Force rotary-wing aircraft S-76A conducted casualty evacuation from shore-to-ship.
