The Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai launched its fourth Type 071 landing platform dock (LPD) amphibious assault ship for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) on 22 January.

The other ship to be launched was the fifth Type 815 'Dongdiao' class intelligence gathering ship (AGI), which berthed adjacent to two other Type 815Gs that are fitting out, one of which was launched in April 2014.

A total of six Type 071 LPDs are anticipated. Three Type 071s are currently stationed in the PLAN's South Sea Fleet base at Zhanjiang and it is possible that three more may be based with the East Sea Fleet.

The Type 071 has an estimated length of 210 m, a displacement of 18,500 tonnes, and a well deck capable of holding four Yuyi-class assault hovercraft. If the hovercraft are removed it is estimated to be able to accommodate up to about 60 armoured vehicles and about 800 troops.

China launches fifth LPD for PLAN | IHS Jane's 360 - 16 June 2017
Quote
China's fifth Yuzhao-class (Type 071) landing platform dock (LPD) vessel was launched on 15 June at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai. Fitting out and sea trials of the previous ship took 12 months: an indication that the newest vessel of the class is likely to enter service in about June 2018.

The Type 071 LPDs are 210 m long and displace more than 20,000 tonnes. Equipped with a hangar that can accommodate up to four medium-lift helicopters, such as the Harbin Z-8, they can also fit four Yuyi-class (Type 726) air-cushioned landing craft in the well deck. For amphibious operations the Type 071 LPDs are likely to embark between 600 and 800 troops.

China's Fifth Type 071 LPD 'Longhushan' Commissioned with the PLAN | Navy Recognition - 19 September 2018
Quote
Longhushan was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in China) as was the case for the first four Type 071 vessels. The LPD was launced on 15 June 2017 and it is the second in the class to join the East Sea Fleet. The first three Type 071s, built between 2005 and 2012, were all assigned to the South Sea Fleet even though this class of vessels had been specifically designed to enhance the Chinese Navy's amphibious capabilities in the "Armed Liberation" scenario of the island of Taiwan.

Originally designed after the Taiwan Strait crisis in 1996, the Type 071, measuring 210 meters long and 28 meters wide, is capable of carrying an 800-man marine battalion and some 20 amphibious tanks.

In the event of an amphibious assault, each Type 071 well deck may deploy at least two Type 726 / Type 726A, a Chinese LCAC of approximately 150 tonnes. Each LCAC itslef is designed to deploy a battle tank (ZTZ-96A for example). The ship is also fitted with two large hangars and a flight deck, where two Z-8J helicopters can be operated simultaneously. The ship is armed with one 76 mm gun and four 30 mm close-in weapon systems.

The Type 071 LPD has an overall length of 210 m, an overall beam of 28 m, and a hull draught of 8 m. The platform has a top speed of 25 kt and can accommodate a crew complement of 156 including 23 officers.

China’s eighth Type 071 in advanced stage of construction
14 May 2019

The ship is being built in the same dry dock used for construction of the seventh Type 071. A considerable number of modules for the latest ship were evident on the dockside before the seventh vessel was launched on 28 December 2018, which has enabled the hull of the latest LPD to be assembled in less than six months.

In a 2 May report to Congress about military and security developments involving China, the US Department of Defense (DoD) said that China will probably continue constructing Type 071s even as the PLAN pursues a follow-on class of amphibious assault ships that are not only larger but also incorporate a full flight deck for helicopters.
