CAAP cancels Saturday morning flights in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Feb. 18 (PNA) -- Commercial flights here were cancelled early Saturday after the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) closed the runway of the Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA).

The CAAP was forced to issue the closure order after a heavy equipment of a construction firm undertaking an asphalt overlay project got stuck in the middle of the runway.

Reynaldo Alforte, CAAP-Zamboanga officer-in-charge, said the asphalt overlay works usually start after the last flight out of ZIA in the evening until early morning the next day.

Alforte said the project began three weeks ago and will be completed in a month’s time.

However, he said, one of the heavy equipment of the construction firm undertaking the project conked out and got stuck while they were working Friday night.

Cancelled were the Manila-Zamboanga and vice-versa; Cebu-Zamboanga; Zamboanga-Tawi-Tawi and vice-versa; and Zamboanga-Cebu morning flights.

Due to the cancellation, the Manila-Zamboanga flight of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) was diverted to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport while that of Cebu-Pacific has returned to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City.

Alforte said commercial flights resumed mid-day Saturday as they re-opened the ZIA runway at 10 a.m.

ZIA’s mid-day flight is that of Davao-Zamboanga and vice-versa. (PNA)

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has allocated PhP221 million to upgrade the runway and continue the rehabilitation of the passenger terminal building of the Zamboanga International Airport.

This was announced Friday by first district Rep. Celso Lobregat during the state of the city report, saying DOTr Sec. Arthur Tugade is very supportive to the plans of improving the existing airport facilities.

Lobregat, who chairs the House Committee on Public Works and Highways, said that PhP160 million of the total allocation will fund the asphalt overlay of the runway, which was recently awarded for contract signing.

The PhP38.9 million repair and rehabilitation project funded by the DOTr is 17.16 percent complete while the replacement of the two baggage conveyors is for contract signing.

Also included in the project is the purchase of 210 trolley pushcarts, wherein the pre-procurement is completed.

Last year, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has also implemented a PhP40 million asphalt overlay project at the local airport.

Meanwhile, Lobregat said the progress report of the feasibility study for the transfer of the airport to another location was already submitted by the consultant to DOTr last December 22, 2017.

The proposed site for the transfer of the airport is on the east coast of this city particularly in the barangays of Mercedes and Talabaan areas.

Lobregat said the conduct of technical survey on the proposed site will follow.

Lobregat has filed House Resolution 1125 urging the DOTr to endorse to the National Economic And Development Authority (NEDA) the proposed transfer of the airport and for NEDA to include it in the priority listing of the national government and the Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022. (PNA)

About time. They renovated the departure area some years ago and it was a significant improvement from the way it was back when I lived there. I've been wondering when they would do the same for the arrival area which hasn't changed all that much. Besides that the exterior of the roof needs renovating, the years haven't been kind to the wood.
