Loaita Cay

Taken from a May 25, 2018 report from the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative:

Quote
On Loaita Cay, a small sandbar, an additional hexagonal shelter has joined the modest outpost, visible in this image from May 17, 2018. The Philippines mostly administers Loaita Cay from nearby Loaita, or Kota, Island to the southeast.

The location of this outpost, which the Philippines calls Panata Island, is often misreported as being on Lankiam Cay, to the east of Loaita Island. While reports suggest Lankiam was once a small sandy cay, it appears to have been washed away, leaving only a submerged reef and a small, shifting sand bar. If there was ever a Filipino facility there, it was moved to Loaita Cay and took the name “Panata Island” with it.

Other PH facilities in Spratlys

Other Philippine-controlled islands in the Spratlys also continued to see minor upgrades in the latter part of the year. Between May and November 2018, a lighthouse was built on the western shore of Likas (West York) Island, the AMTI said.

The Philippines announced last year that it plans to build five lighthouses in the West Philippine Sea.

Meanwhile, a Philippine flag was also painted on the roof of a shelter built in Kota Island (Loaita Cay) on Dec. 8 last year, as seen on a satellite image.

Kota is a Philippine word for a “Fort” and is internationally known as “Loaita Island”. Its size is approximately 6.45 hectares. It is located 22 miles southeast of Pag-asa. It fringes the Laoita bank and reef. Its calcarenite outcrop is visible along its western side at low tide. The present shape of the island indicates sand build-up along its eastern side. The anchor-shaped side is expected to eventually connect with the northern portion as the sand buildup continues, thereby creating another mini-lagoon in the process.
