Saky airfield: Ukraine claims Crimea blasts responsibility after denial

Ukraine has claimed responsibility for a series of air strikes on Crimea after a month of uncertainty over who was behind them.

One of the attacks, which took place in early August, targeted Russia's Saky military base and killed one person.

Ukraine had refused to acknowledge its role and even blamed them on Russian soldiers' discarded cigarettes.

It confirms a significant expansion of the conflict by Ukraine into Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

In an article for national news agency Ukrinform, Kyiv's top commander Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said Ukrainian rockets had targeted a number of Crimean military sites, including the Saky airbase which was rocked by multiple explosions on 9 August.

He claimed the attack - against a base used by Moscow to launch attacks against Ukraine - took 10 Russian warplanes "out of action".

THE PHILIPPINES’ anti-graft court has dropped the case against former first gentleman Jose Miguel T. Arroyo relating to the procurement of secondhand choppers by the police force in 2009.

In a three-page resolution dated September 21 and made public on Sept. 22, the Sandiganbayan Seventh Division ordered Mr. Arroyo’s exclusion from the case in compliance with a Supreme Court decision stating that the charge against him lacked evidence.

“Wherefore, in compliance with the resolution dated December 1, 2021, of the Supreme Court, the name Jose Miguel T. Arroyo is ordered dropped from the information under the criminal case,” said the anti-graft court. “The charge filed against him is necessarily ordered dismissed.”

The Sandiganbayan added that the hold departure order issued against the former first gentleman had already been recalled on June 1.

Russian Parliament begins process to rubber-stamp annexations as Moscow struggles to define borders
By Olga Voitovych and Joshua Berlinger, CNN
Updated 12:21 PM EDT, Mon October 3, 2022

https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/03/europe/russia-ukraine-annexation-intl/index.html

Russia’s legislature on Monday began the process of approving President Vladimir Putin’s decision to annex four parts of Ukraine, despite the fact that the Kremlin is not in full control of those regions and has not settled upon the exact boundaries of the territories it is attempting to absorb.

Legislative approval of the annexation, which is illegal under international law, is expected to be a formality, although it will take a couple of days. Putin and his allies effectively control both branches of the Russian legislature, and the space for political dissent in Russia has shrunk in recent years.

Ukraine retakes a key city Putin claimed to have annexed. Here's why it matters.

Ukraine said it had retaken full control of a key eastern city on Sunday, handing the Kremlin another stinging setback just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin proclaimed that the area would belong to his country forever.

The recapture of Lyman represents a symbolic and strategic victory for Kyiv, which vowed its forces would push deeper into occupied territory after forcing Moscow's military into its latest bloody and humiliating retreat. Western officials and observers said Russia’s loss of a logistics hub key to the supply of forces in the south and east was a significant development that could pave the way for more.

"Lyman is cleared fully," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced early Sunday, hours after Russia's Defense Ministry said it was withdrawing its troops to more favorable defensive positions after facing likely encirclement.

Lyman is in the Donetsk region, which together with neighboring Luhansk makes up Ukraine's eastern industrial heartland of the Donbas. Putin illegally claimed the areas, as well as the partially occupied southern regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, at a grand Kremlin ceremony on Friday that drew global condemnation.

Latest military ATMOS units arrive in Central Mindanao
By Edwin Fernandez

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1185091

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao – Eight units of the self-propelled 155-mm Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer System (ATMOS) 2000 arrived here Saturday to increase the military’s capability in the fight against terrorism in Central Mindanao.

The military hardware were sent Friday afternoon from Makar Port in General Santos City.

Maj. Gen. Roy Galido, commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID) based here, said the eight truck-mounted howitzers will be distributed to various units of the Joint Task Force Central (JTFC) to support counter-terrorism operations.

“This new capability will be utilized against the terrorist groups who are now on the run because of our relentless focus military operation,” Galido, concurrent JTFC commander, said in a statement during the units' arrival in General Santos City on Thursday.

The military assets sailed from Naval Base Heracleo Alano, Sangley Point, Cavite City on September 24.

Three days earlier, a sendoff ceremony led by Undersecretary Jose Faustino Jr., Department of National Defense Officer-in-Charge, was held at the Philippine Army Grandstand in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

“ATMOS is the biggest gun in the Army arsenal to date. With automatic loading and digital fire control, it can deliver accurate fires to a range of up to 41 kilometers,” Galido said.

The ATMOS will greatly help in the suppression of insurgency and terrorism, he added.

“An advantage of ATMOS is that it offers high accuracy and shoot and scoot’ operation yet can operate on the existing road network and bridges found in the country,” he said.

The 6ID area of responsibility includes the provinces of Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, and parts of Lanao del Sur, North Cotabato, and Sarangani.

The ATMOS artillery pieces were procured under the Horizon 2 of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Plan led by former Defense chief Delfin Lorenzana, now the Chair of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority.

They were acquired from Israel’s Elbit Systems in a USD47-million contract (about PHP2.7 billion) signed in 2020.

In April, he Philippine Army's artillery units test-fired for the first time its newly-acquired ATMOS at Fort Magsaysay Military Reservation Area in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija.

The Army received 12 howitzer units in December 2021. (PNA)

Russian troops forced out of key Ukraine town – BBC News

https://youtu.be/oaNwxtLKyk0

Oct 1, 2022  Russia has withdrawn its troops from the strategic Ukrainian town of Lyman, in a move seen as a significant setback for its campaign in the east.

The retreat came amid fears thousands of soldiers would be encircled in the town, Russia's defence ministry said.

Recapturing Lyman is of strategic significance for Ukraine. The town had been used as a logistics hub by Russia, and could give Ukrainian troops access to more territory in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
