General Discussion / Chinese investors eye 3 PH islets

islets that are strategic and can be used against us..

https://globalnation.inquirer.net/178612/chinese-investors-eye-3-ph-isles

The 10,000-hectare Fuga Island is a quiet, coastal town in Babuyan archipelago, the second northernmost island group in the Philippines. Its location provides access to both sides of the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea.

For the Philippine Navy, Fuga and all other features in the Batanes Group of Islands are considered “strategic features” because “it can potentially control access to Luzon Strait.”

“It is one of the rationales for establishing presence on Mavulis Island at the border with Taiwan,” said the Navy spokesperson, Capt. Jonathan Zata, referring to the naval detachment launched in the northernmost part of the Philippines this year.

Fuga Island is also considered “unique” by the Navy for its private airfield on one of the adjacent islets and lies astride a telecommunications submarine cable connecting the country with mainland Asia.

Discussions about all nations and places / cost of a Chinese Warship
« on: July 23, 2019, 02:09:10 PM »
https://thediplomat.com/2015/06/how-much-do-chinas-warships-actually-cost/

Weapons: $84 million, 24 percent. The most expensive part of the Type 054A’s weapons suite is likely the vertical launching system cells. An 8-cell module from the US Mk 41 VLS system – the most widely used in the world – costs around $15 million. The Type 054A has 32 total VLS cells and the author discounts the 8-cell module cost to $10 million, making the system cost an estimated $40 million. The second most expensive component of the Type 054A’s armament are its two Type 730 close in weapon systems (“CIWS”), which likely cost around $11 million for both. The U.S. Navy’s Phalanx Block 1B CIWS costs $5.6 million per unit, and the author believes this is a reasonable proxy for the Type 730 CIWS cost because although the Chinese gun is a larger caliber and the system is physically larger, the assembly and materials costs are likely substantially lower.

maybe, a ballpark for JRF VLS and CIWS..

US$ 6-8million dollar for this functions --

VertiJet can fulfill a variety of military missions including combat search and rescue (CSAR); ship-to-shore logistics; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR); armed escort, and special operations..

The VertiJet is a runway-independent aircraft that can take off and land vertically and hover similar to a helicopter. VertiJet will incorporate technologies designed and developed by Skyworks in the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA's) Heliplane programme to achieve an estimated top speed of 644 km/h and a range of 1,000 n miles with a maximum payload of 454 kg.

death blow for huawei

Huawei has yet another major problem in the pipeline, as BBC is reporting that Arm has supposedly told its staff to halt business deals with Huawei.

Employees were apparently told “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements,” with Huawei and its subsidiaries in compliance with the US trade ban on the company.

While Arm is a UK tech firm, it believes it is still affected by the US restrictions on technology transfer as its designs contain US Origin technology.

The OPV design selected by the Qatari Navy has a length of 63 meters, a maximum breadth of 9.20 meters, a draft of 2.60 meters for a full load displacement of 670 tons.

Its maximum speed is set to be 30 knots, its range 1500 nautical miles (at 15 knots). The propulsion system consists in 4x diesel engines, 4 shafts and 4 fixed pitched propellers. It will have an endurance of 7 days at sea.

The crew complement will be 38 sailors.

*******************

n terms of weapon systems, the OPVs will actually be closer to FACM (Fast Attack Craft Missile) or even light corvettes: The OPVs will be fitted with a 76mm main gun by Leonardo, 8x VLS cells for VL MICA surface to air missiles (by MBDA), two Marlins 30mm remote weapon stations (Leonardo), 4x Exocet MM40 Block III (MBDA) anti-ship missiles.

Leonardo is responsible for the integrated supply of the new naval units’ combat system (Athena), main radar system (Kronos) and on-board sensors and defence sub-systems, including the fire control system.

Two Sylena Mk2 decoy launchers by Lacroix will protect the vessels against anti-ship missile threats.

NARWHAL® accommodates the reliable Nexter 20mm automatic cannon (available in two versions), in service with the French Navy, Army and Air Force and in 25 countries worldwide. Firing either 20x102mm NATO standard, M50 and PGU type ammunition or 20x139mm ammunition with high terminal effect, NARWHAL® provides superior firepower with significantly higher effective range than those of heavy machine guns and is definitely a real alternative to greater medium calibre versions. Equipped with a dual-field day color camera and thermal imager, combined with a moving target auto-tracker, NARWHAL® ensures high standards of performance, exceptional accuracy and availability with superior hit performance up to an effective range of 2000m, facilitating reduced ammunition usage, even in severe weather conditions and rough sea.

****************

The cost of the construction is around 430 million euros of which 115 million euros is reportedly covered by the government of Germany. This is for the four vessels but the vessels only, without the cost of Israeli weapons and electronic equipment, which will be installed in Israel.

The Saar 6 class was developed from the German MEKO A100 base (and variations for the German Navy K130 corvettes). The Saar 6 vessels will not just be "Patrol Vessels" as initially reported but rather powerful Corvettes with a displacement in excess of 2,000 tons and a length of 90 meters. The width of the class is 13.5 meters and its draft is more than 4 meters. Their maximum speed is 26 knots thanks to their diesel power plant and dual-shaft arrangement. The crew complement is about 70 sailors.

******

Saar 6 class corvettes will be heavily armed for their size: They are set to be fitted with:
- 32x VLS cells for Barak 8 surface to air missile system by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)
- 2x C-DOME naval point defense system launchers by Rafael (20x Tamir missiles in each launcher for a total of 40x per ship)
- 16x anti-ship missiles (Boeing Harpoon Block 2 or Israel's IAI Gabriel Mk 5)
- 1x 76mm Oto Melara Super Rapid main gun
- 2x Typhoon 25mm remote weapon stations by Rafael (likely able to launch Spike-ER missiles as well)
- 2x 324mm torpedo launchers for MK54 Lightweight Torpedo by Raytheon

The main sensor system aboard the Saar 6 will be the MF-STAR multifunction AESA radar by IAI. Saar 6 corvettes will have hangar space and platform able to accommodate a medium class (SH-60 type) helicopter.
