Aside from new aircraft and ballistic missiles, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has also demonstrated its new assault fighting vehicles during a military parade on Thursday, Sept. 3, that marks the 70th anniversary of the Allied victory against Japan in World War II.

Among the fighting vehicles showcased to the public for the first are the PGZ-07 self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles, according to the Global Times. Equipped with a pair of 35mm cannons, the PGZ-07 is designed to attack helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles. The vehicle's cannons can also be loaded with different types of munitions, including high explosive incendiary, armor piercing, and target practice tracer rounds.

A footage from Chinese TV channel CCTV 7 has showed the use by Chinese army of the PGZ07 ( Twin-35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft cannon and the HQ-17 a short to medium range air defense missile system which seems very similar to the Russian-made TOR-M1 (

According some Chinese internet sources, the HQ-17 is a local-made Russian Tor-M1 produced under license in China.
The HQ-17 uses a indigenous tracked chassis and is equipped with a new Identify Friend Foe (IFF) antenna on top the search radar, electronically scanned radars for better performance against enemy jamming, and can be connected to datalink with other Chinese artillery and command systems.

In 1996, China ordered 15 Tor-M1 missile systems from Russia which were delivered under contract in 1999. In 1998, another contract for 20 Tor-M1 systems was signed between Russia and China. Delivery of the systems took place in 2000.

The PGZ-07 twin 35 mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) system currently in service with China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) has been upgraded with the addition of a new sensor pod.

The existing sensor pod is positioned above the tracking radar, which is mounted on the forward part of the turret, and includes a laser rangefinder to ensure that the target is within the effective range of the 35 mm cannon. The additional sensor pod is mounted to the right of the tracking radar.

The sensor pods contain a number of systems, including a charge-couple device (CCD) camera and a thermal imager, that enable the 35 mm cannon to be used in almost all weather conditions.

Furthermore, the pods can be used if electronic countermeasures are jamming the surveillance and tracking radars, or if adversaries are using anti-radiation missiles (ARM).

The 35 mm cannon used in the PGZ-07 are Chinese-manufactured versions of the Swiss Oerlikon (today Rheinmetall Air Defence) KDA, which are also used in the similar German Krauss-Maffei Wegmann Gepard twin 35 mm SPAAG.
