Lockheed Martin became the first competitor on 13 October for a US Air Force (USAF) contract to design the next US intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to reveal its industrial partnerships for the competition.

The company's Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) programme team includes General Dynamics, which is working on the system's command and control capability; Draper Laboratories, which is developing guidance, navigation, and control systems; Moog, which is providing cross-vector control systems; and Bechtel, which is working on launch facilities.

Boeing and Northrop Grumman also confirmed their intent to bid for the work but have declined to name industrial partners. The programme will replace the USAF's ageing Minuteman III missile. All three companies delivered their proposals for the work to the air force on the 11 October deadline, according to company statements.

Lockheed Martin is the only competitor for the GBSD contract to replace the USAF's legacy LGM-30 Minuteman ICBMs (pictured) to have revealed its industry team. Northrop Grumman and Boeing have also submitted bids but have not revealed partners. (USAF)
