China Is Now Building Its Second Aircraft Carrier
The new ship will be the first designed by actual Chinese engineers.

The sea is about to become a little more crowded.

China's Defense Ministry confirmed that China's second aircraft carrier is under construction. The state-run newspaper Xinhua stated that the aircraft carrier is China's first to be built "completely on its own," without using a foreign-made hull or extensive foreign assistance.

The photo above is a satellite image taken of the carrier under construction in Dalian, China. The carrier hull is being constructed in two pieces.

The carrier, alternately known in Chinese defense-watching circles as CV-17 (China's first carrier, Liaoning, is CV-16) or Type 001A will have a displacement of 50,000 tons and "will be a base for J-15 ('Flying Shark') and other types of aircraft," a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

Everything We Know About China's New Aircraft Carrier
Robert Farley
October 28, 2016

http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/everything-we-know-about-chinas-new-aircraft-carrier-18224

Slowly but surely, China’s first indigenous carrier is coming into being. Laid down in 2015 with an expected launch date in 2017 or 2018, China’s second aircraft carrier may enter full service sometime around 2020. The lack of transparency around the project has spurred a tremendous degree of speculation, down to some very basic questions. As was the case with Liaoning (CV-16), China’s first carrier, analysts have a name problem; no one is quite sure what to call the new ship. For years as Liaoning underwent construction and refit, China-watchers guessed as to the correct name, generally settling on the accurate but inelegant “ex-Varyag” (other guesses included Shi Lang and Zheng He). While some have suggested “Shandong,” most commentators have settled around “CV-17.”

So, what do we know about CV-17?

Photos of CV-17, under construction at Dalian Shipbuilding, suggest that she will strongly resemble China’s first carrier. She appears to be of roughly similar size to Liaoning, has a ski-jump, and apparently will have conventional propulsion. Speculating on the basis of the appearance of a few models in the public domain, Andrew Erickson suggests that CV-17 may use gas or diesel/gas turbines (reports on Liaoning’s propulsion system remain mixed and uncertain, but many suspect she uses Soviet-style steam turbines).

Beijing’s second aircraft carrier ‘takes shape’ after two years, nine months of construction: media | SCMP (http://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/2066802/beijings-second-aircraft-carrier-takes-shape-after-two) - 31 January, 2017

Beijing’s second aircraft carrier was “taking shape” after two years and nine months of construction, mainland Chinese media reported – a move likely to further unnerve Taiwan and other neighbours about its growing military assertiveness.

Construction of the Shandong, named after a province in China’s east coast, began in 2014, the mobile app of Shandong television and radio said in a report seen on Tuesday.

The Shandong, mainland China’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, was “taking shape”, the report said. It did not give a date for completion or further details.

It was being built in the northeastern port of Dalian, the Defence Ministry has said.

Airbus Defence and Space imagery captured on 13 January shows progress being made with China's Type 001A aircraft carrier (CV) at the Dalian shipyard in northeastern China, where the carrier hull is progressing towards being launched.

< snipped >

On 20 February state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported that some of the support equipment, possibly including support bracers or scaffolding around the upper surfaces, had been removed and that red paint had been applied to the hull. Red anti-fouling paint is used beneath the waterline to prevent the growth of marine organisms on the hull, which can affect performance.

The lack of major external components remaining to be installed on the Type 001A CV hull, and the presence of the red anti-fouling paint on the lower hull, indicates that it is nearing launch. The only major exterior work remaining involves surfacing and painting the flight deck. It may be possible to perform this task following launch, should the dry dock be required for another shipbuilding programme. A key indicator that the Type 001A is preparing for launch will be removal of extant support bracers currently in place within the dry dock, as well as any remaining equipment or materials residing on the dry dock floor.

China Exclusive: China's second aircraft carrier in shape as navy sets ambitious goals
Source: Xinhua | 2017-03-09 22:19:37 | Editor: huaxia

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2017-03/09/c_136116423.htm

BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) -- The building of China's second aircraft carrier is in good shape as the hull blocks have been joined in the dock, said a senior navy official.

Wang Weiming, deputy chief of staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, told Xinhua on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC) that the carrier is now awaiting fitting.

China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, is a refitted former Soviet Union-made carrier. The second carrier, with a displacement of 50,000 tonnes, will be a base for J-15 fighters and other aircraft, according to a Defense Ministry spokesperson who confirmed its building -- completely on China's own -- in a press briefing in December 2015.

< Edited >

He vowed better quantity, quality, scope, and functionality of naval armament manufacturing in 2017.

China was making final preparations to launch its first domestically built aircraft carrier as itmarked the 68th anniversary of the founding of the PLA Navy on Sunday.

The scaffolding around the ship, temporarily named the Type 001A, was removed and the deck was cleared, Shanghai-based news portal thepaper.cn reported, suggesting that the launch date was getting close.

However, experts said tidal conditions yesterday were not conducive for a launch to mark the navy’s birthday, and expected a ceremony to take place in the next few days.

< Edited >

It is slightly larger than the Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier, which was refurbished from the semi-completed Soviet carrier Varyag, which Beijing bought from a Ukrainian shipyard in 1998.

From the successful refitting of the Liaoning in 2011 and its commission a year later, China spent just five years to produce the 001A. Even though its layout is almost the same, the new carrier features the latest equipment, including a bigger hangar to carry more J-15 fighters and more space on deck for helicopters and other aircraft.

China's first home-built carrier ready for launch
Advances in Beijing's military tech will speed fleet development

http://asia.nikkei.com/Politics-Economy/Policy-Politics/China-s-first-home-built-carrier-ready-for-launch

TOKYO -- China's first domestically built aircraft carrier will soon launch at Dalian for drills and trial voyages, putting to the test proprietary technology meant to further Beijing's expansion in the South and East China seas.

A dock at a shipyard in the Liaoning Province city was apparently filled with water Sunday in preparation for the launch. The Chinese-made vessel is expected to enter service around 2020, joining China's first aircraft carrier, a refurbished Ukrainian vessel known as the Liaoning. The new ship, like its predecessor, will be conventionally propelled, as opposed to nuclear-powered, and feature a sloped flight deck known as a ski jump for aircraft takeoff. It is somewhat smaller than the Liaoning, with a displacement of around 50,000 tons compared to around 67,000 tons.

Even though the 001A may launch in the coming days, it will likely undergo sea trials for more than a year, with its eventual commissioning into the PLAN taking place in 2018 or 2019. China, in the meantime, has started work on its third aircraft carrier, which is provisionally named in the Type 002. Little is known about this second indigenously built carrier, but reports have suggested that the Type 002 will incorporate a conventional steam launch catapult.

The Type 002 may not launch until after 2020.

Like Liaoning, the Type 001A is a conventionally powered short take-off but arrested recovery (STOBAR) carrier and is thus fitted with a 'ski-jump'.

According to Chinese state media, however, the new vessel is expected to be faster (top speed of 31 kt) than Liaoning (29 kt) and has a shorter island and a larger hangar. According to the state-owned Global Times newspaper, the Type 001A is expected to embark between 32 and 36 J-15 carrier-based fighters compared to the 24 J-15s Liaoning can carry.

What do we know (so far) about China's second aircraft carrier?

Five years after commissioning its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, China launched its second carrier – the Type 001A – on April 26, 2017. Unlike its Soviet-built predecessor, the Type 001A is China’s first domestically built carrier. Both carriers are similar in size and use a STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) system for the launch and recovery of aircraft. Although similar to the Liaoning, the Type 001A features some notable enhancements and represents an important step in China’s developing aircraft carrier program.

Key Facts

The control tower island of the Type 001A is approximately 10 percent smaller than that of the Liaoning.
It displaces roughly 65,000 – 70,000 tons, a few thousand more tons than the Liaoning.
It features the advanced Type 346 S-band AESA radar system.
Its airwing is expected to be slightly larger than that of the Liaoning, featuring around 8 additional aircraft.
The Type 001A may have an internal arrangement that is better optimized than the Liaoning’s.
It is expected to be commissioned around 2020.

China Prepares Type 001A Aircraft Carrier for Sea Trial | Navy Recognition (http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php/news/defence-news/2018/march-2018-navy-naval-defense-news/6102-china-prepares-type-001a-aircraft-carrier-for-sea-trial.html) - 30 March 2018

According to the latest online photos from the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) construction site in Liaoning Province, where the carrier was launched and outfitted, the scaffolds on the carrier have been completely removed, and a phased array radar has been installed.

"All the equipment and devices on the carrier are in the joint debugging stage, and the main engine has been powered. In 2018, we will present a surprise to the Chinese people," DSIC Chairman Liu Zheng said, according to a report on cctv.com, the official website of China Central Television, on March 13.

< snipped >

Full speed

The Type 001A was launched in Dalian on April 26 2017, three days after Navy Day, and the outfitting work only took about one year.

The speed with which the Type 001A was built was the fastest in the history of aircraft carrier construction, as it only took two years from the laying of the foundation in the shipyard to its launch, and more importantly, everything from the ship's body to its devices is domestically built, Liu said.

"The quality of our construction is also world-class. For example, the world-class standard for the flatness of the flight deck is not more than 4 percent, and we made it lower than 3 percent," Liu noted.

All in the name

During the Two Sessions, Yuan Maorong, an NPC deputy from Taizhou city, East China's Zhejiang Province, suggested naming the carrier "Wei Wen", after a military general from the Three Kingdoms period (AD 184/220-280) who was the first man in history to arrive at Taiwan, according to cctv.com on March 13.

Yuan said naming the carrier Wei Wen would show the historical fact of Taiwan being an integral part of China, and push the development of Cross-Straits relations.

The discussion of how the ship should be named has also been spreading in social media. Many Chinese netizens suggested simply naming the carrier "Taiwan," while others suggested naming it "Shi Lang", an admiral who recaptured Taiwan for the Qing Dynasty.

"This displays the high expectations among the Chinese people over solving the Taiwan question, because they want the country to use the first domestically built aircraft carrier as a symbol to announce its determination and ability to achieve this aim, and also send a tough warning signal to the secessionists in Taiwan," Li noted.

China's first home-built aircraft carrier set to carry out maiden sea trial in April

HONG KONG - China's first home-built aircraft carrier will take to sea later this month (April) in her maiden sea voyage designed to coincide with the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, reported South China Morning Post.

The yet-to-be-named carrier, temporarily referred to as Type 001A in the Chinese media, was launched on April 26 last year (2017).

< Edited >

But the government has said the carrier's design draws on experiences from the country's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, bought from Ukraine in 1998 and refitted in China.

< Edited >

The main difference between the two aircraft carriers is that the new one has more space for aircraft and helicopters, according to the China Daily.

< Edited >

Sources close to the military told the Post Type 001A will embark on her maiden sea voyage in the northeastern Bohai Sea later this month.

< Edited >

"Unlike China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which was refurbished from a Russian-made steel hull, the Type 001A was made using a special Chinese steel, which is a new cutting-edge shipbuilding technology that needs to be tested.

< Edited >

Self-ruled Taiwan, claimed by Beijing as its own, has said China is actually building two new aircraft carriers, but China has not officially confirmed the existence of another carrier, according to Reuters

Chinese state media has quoted experts as saying that the country needs at least six carriers, and a network of bases around the world to support their operations. The US navy operates 10 aircraft carriers.

China’s New Aircraft Carrier Heads Out for Sea Trials | The Diplomat (https://thediplomat.com/2018/05/chinas-new-aircraft-carrier-heads-out-for-sea-trials/) - May 13, 2018

The People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLA Navy) first domestically designed and built aircraft carrier, the Type 001A Shandong (CV-17), began its maiden sea trial early Sunday morning, Chinese state media reported.

The yet-to-be-christened warship set out at 7am local time from a dock at the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) shipyard in China’s Liaoning Province, according to local media reports. The first round of sea trials is expected to primarily test the reliability of the carrier’s power and propulsion systems.  Furthermore, “sea trials will test the carrier’s overall seaworthiness including its speed, maneuverability, and equipment such as radar and communications systems, as well as safety features,” I noted in April.

The sea trials are going to take place in the northeastern part of the Bohai Sea, the innermost gulf of the Yellow Sea and Korea Bay. The Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration has declared a restricted area off the Dalian coast from Sunday to noon on Friday May 18. Last month, the local maritime authority announced that it had requested three areas in the northeastern Bohai and Yellow Seas to be cordoned off for PLA Navy activities for eight days raising expectations that the Type 001A was going to set out for its maiden voyage that month.

Carrier rendezvous at Dalian Shipyard
Some wonder if mooring the two carriers in Dalian has crated a 'defense void' in disputed areas of the South China Sea
By FRANK CHEN MAY 30, 2018 6:45 PM (UTC+8)

http://www.atimes.com/article/chinas-two-carriers-both-dock-in-dalian/

Liaoning, the People’s Liberation Army’s solo aircraft carrier in service, has joined her sister ship, the nation’s first domestically built carrier which has yet to be christened, at the Dalian Shipyard since Sunday.

Chinese papers and military buffs are hailing the historic rendezvous of the two seagoing airbases, relishing the picture-perfect occasion of two huge vessels moored alongside each other.

Liaoning is back at her homeport of Dalian in the northeastern Chinese province it is named after for scheduled maintenance as well as R&R for her crew, having spent the majority of the first half of the year at sea. It also led an armada of ships and submarines in April which included a high-profile passage through the Taiwan Strait.

The last time Liaoning was in dry-dock was in May 2014, in the same berth where the Soviet-era vessel was retrofitted. The new homemade carrier is almost a lookalike of the Liaoning with an identical ski-jump bow. It is also moored at the Dalian Shipyard after undergoing its first sea trial earlier this month.

Recent photos indicate the new carrier is undergoing checks below her waterline, with some activity suggesting newer layers of anti-corrosion coating being put on the hull.

< Edited >

Some have also questioned if there’s now a “defense void” on China’s offshore fronts, in particular in the South China Sea, given the fact that the US sent in the Higgins, a guided-missile destroyer, and the Antietam, a guided-missile cruiser, last week right after Liaoning sailed out of those waters.

A big navy needs at least three carriers to work in shifts: one berthed for checks, one at sea for training purposes while the third stays combat-ready.
